11th North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council election passed off peacefully

With the casting of 80% plus of votes in the polling to the 11th North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council election passed off peacefully and with great enthusiasm among the people of Dima Hasao District. Right from the morning 7 am, people were seen in long queue at almost all the polling stations in and around Haflong. In the morning casting of votes was 27 % which increased gradually. A total of 120754 numbers of voters were to cast their votes in 200 polling station which was divided in to ten zones like Haflong, Dehangi, Langting, Mahur, Harangajao, Maibang, Umrangso Diyungbra, Khepre and Jinam and constituencies are 28 . Counting will be on May 24th next. All the polling booths in and around Haflong had been prepared with proper facilities including security. However at Waisikhong polling station of16 Diyungmukh constituency was stopped by Gaon Bura of Waishikhong village objecting 110 voters to cast their votes for two hours. Later with the intervention of the Returning Officer and Deputy Commissioner Barun Bhuiyan the matter was settled. An elaborate security arrangement had also been made so that no any untoward incidents could happen during the election process. As 138 candidates were finally contesting to the 11th North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council election slated to be held on May 20. Among these Congress party had field 28 candidates while BJP fielded 9, Hills State Democratic Party fielded 14 and rest from former Dima Halam Daogah and others as the independent candidates. Constituencies like Diyungmukh, Hamri, Langting etc. witnessed tough contest since from these constituencies leaders like Dilip Nunisa, Niranjan Hojai, Daniel Dimasa, Debojit Thaosen were contesting. Though this time it was tough enough to fore cast the trend of the voters but according to the political observers this time none can bag the absolute majority.

The road communications in-between Haflong – Maibang and Haflong – Laisong are totally disrupted due to bridge collapse when the NKC Construction company was passing two overloaded trucks carrying heavy load for the construction of Mahasadak near Mahur, 40 KM from Haflong in Dima Hasao on Monday at about 7 PM. This Bailey bridge with 9 ton capacity was constructed way back in 1980s by the GREF and since then the bridge was not maintained properly. After a lull of few months, miscreants exploded a crude bomb at the residence of one Musafir Ali Laskar a businessman and a resident of Kali Bari colony of Haflong at about 7.15 PM today(Monday). Impact of the blast damaged the front side of the residence causing no casualty. The police immediately rushed to the spot and launched a combing operation to nab the culprits in and around the Haflong area.
