JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Social activist held for proving AASU-Bajrang dal nexus

The Nalbari police have arrested a social activist a couple of days he broke, with evidence, a nexus between All Assam Students Union and Bajrang Dal triggering huge protest across the state. He is none other than Jnyanen Chakrabarty who uploaded a video showing the Bajrang Dal’s festoones inside an AASU office suggesting an unholy and hidden pact between the Hindu religious group and the influential student organization which went viral.  Many organizations and individuals have condemned the arrest of Chakravarty and staged protest demanding his immediate release. Guwahati storm toll goes up to 3

The death toll in the huge storm that lashed Guwahati and its adjacent areas on Sunday has gone up to three with the death of two more people.  Two people died when they were fishing at a waterbody in the Maligaon area of the city. Vishwakarma puja festivity

Vishwakarma puja festivity grips Assam on Sunday across the state where the god of construction is being worshipped with much religious fervour. Factories and industries, technical institutes and laboratories wore a festive look with the workers and employees offered puja to the god.  Prabajan Virodhi Manch, a social organization against the immigration issue, has raised serious concern over the Centre’s decision to grant citizenship to the Chakma and Hajong refugees in Arunachal Pradesh. The police probing the public comment against Jiten Dutta  have withdrawn the case on Saturday after the former ULFA rebel personally appeared before them with a note of clarification. Dutta, the hardcore ULFA rebel who enjoyed close association with Paresh Baruah arrived in the Moran police station where the investigation officers who booked him questioned him on his recent comment. Assam tables historic bill

In a historic move, the Assam government on Friday moved s bill in the legislative assembly to ensure proper care for the elders.  Moving the Bill on the floor senior minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the bill if turned into an Act would make it mandatory for all government employees to ensure proper care for their parents.  “The government would not tolerate negligence to the parents of an employees. A govt employee will have to face action “ said Sarma.  Assam is the first state to have moved such bill aiming at enduring care for the elders.

Crop insurance scheme in the pipeline

Crop Cutting Experiments (CCEs) under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), which were delayed due to floods in many parts of the State, are expected to start shortly and the government has also started work to implement PMFBY during the forthcoming Rabi season.  CCEs were delayed as most of the crop fields were under floodwater. It will start very soon where the field officials or agricultural extension assistants (AEAs) will be using smart phones to upload yield data. The Dibrugarh police have arrested Akhil Gogoi on Wednesday a day after the RTI activist announced his preparedness to take up arms to safeguard the interest of the people. A team of Dibrugarh police rushed to Golaghat town in the evening and arrested the leader from his own residence. According to police, they registered a case against Gogoi tried to fuel anti national activities urging them to remain prepared to take up arms as he was addressing a huge rally near the town.
