JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Union home minister Rajnath Singh will be on a two days visit to Assam from Sunday. After a brief halt in Guwahati, the Union minister is scheduled to leave for Silchar where he would visit the Indo-Bangla border. Eminent artist and prime architect of Udalguri art village Rabiram Brahma has been announced the winner of Pranab Barua Art Award 2015. The selection committee has declared the name of Brahma, who is a pass out from Baroda MS University, on Thursday. The police team probing the GS Road clash is unlikely to arrest Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday. The move to nab the BJP leader was revised after the top police officers stressed gathering more evidence against Sarma to be filed before the court. A section of Congress leaders also does not want Himanta Biswa Sarma to be arrested saying that the arrest would help him steal the limelight. "Why he should be arrested? He struck the controversy only to be arrested to get the focus. He provoked the BJP activists only to be arrested," said a senior Congress leader. Sarma, who 'fled' to Dhaka hours after the clash is returning to Guwahati on Thursday.  
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is coming to Assam on January 18. During his day long visit to the state Modi will open the gas cracker project in Dibrugarh. He was scheduled to do it in February first week. But he is forced to prepone it in view of the assembly polls early next year.

The police team probing the GS Road clash on Monday is believed to have been preparing to arrest Himanta Biswa Sarma charging him with engineering the clash where many Congress and BJP activists sustained injured. According to sources, policemen are expected to arrest the BJP leader as soon as he arrives from Dhaka.
