JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

NorthEast United FC beat Atletico de Kolkata

NorthEast United FC beat Atletico de Kolkata by 1-0 in the Match 19 of the Hero Indian Super League clash in Guwahati on Friday. Striker Nicolas Velez scored the mch needed goal for NEUFC in the 77th minute. The Argentine striker scored for the second successive game as NorthEast won two matches on the trot after losing three matches in a row. The Highlanders are now sixth on the table with six points. 

New NCHAC body on Saturday

A special session of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council is expected to pave the way for forming a BJP-led executive body on Saturday. The session is all set to begin at 10 in the morning at Haflong to allow BJP to form the new executive body to run the council a week after the Debojeet Thaosen-led body resigned. BJP has already staked its claim to the form the executive body after more Congress members joined the party in addition to the support from others. Thaosen resigned as chief executive member after he lost his majority forcing the authority to convene a special session. Idol immersion to complete by noon

The Durga puja din and bustle have died down when the idols of the goddess were immersed on Friday. The immersion started from Thursday afternoon across the state. But all committees will complete the immersion process only on Friday. In Guwahati also, at least 100 puja committees immersed the idols in three places on the river Brahmaputra which took place till midnight. Others in the premier north eastern city are preparing to immerse the idols by 12 noon at the initiatives of the district administration. People thronged in thousands at Kachari Ghat, Pandu Ghat and Noonmati to see the immersion from early in the morning.

Brinks Arya driver held; HDFC cash seized

In a major achievement, Guwahati police and their Goalpara counterpart have arrested four youths in connection with the HDFC case where a Brink Arya driver had gone missing with Rs 1.80 crore in cash meant to be put in ATM counters.According to Guwahati Police Commissioner, the arrested youths include the driver Rumud Barman who smartly disappeared from Ganeshguri with the entire amount in cash when three others from the bank and service provider went inside an ATM booth.A joint team of police caught Rumud along with four others from Krishnai area and seized Rs 1.15 crore from them they kept with some of their relatives. Steps for Durga idol immersion

Amid a massive security arrangement Durga puja organizers are preparing to immerse the idols of the goddess on Thursday.  But a section of the organizers is refusing immerse the idols. This has forced the authorities to ask all Durga puja organizers to immerse the idols of the goddess on a same day. Guwahati is also gearing up for the immersion ceremony on the river Brahmaputra.
