JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

SAF Games deferred to Feb next year

Unpreparedness and climatic conditions in the north eastern region of India have forced the organizers to reschedule the South Asian Games (SAF) in Guwahati and Shillong. The sports event now will held in February next year.  The detail schedule has yet to be finallised. Helping hand for Bhuban valley tea

Setback for megadam construction

Nirupama Borgohain to return award

The diabolic tentacles in Dadri have forced yet another litterateur to return the coveted award. She is none other than Niropama Borgohain who is all set to return the Sahitya Akademy award she received in 1996 for her novel Abhijatri.She took the decision hours after Homen Borgohain confirmed the return of the award joining the award winning authors’ chorus against the incident in Dadri where prime minister Narendra Modi maintains stoic silence. 

Demo for ST status for Ahoms

Hundreds of Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad leaders and workers staged demonstration in Tinsukia demanding immediate ST status for the Tai Ahom community.Talking to Assam Times, the protestors said that the government promised ST status before the election. But during the last one and a half year has passed. Paresh aide surrenders

Clear Kaziranga of immigrants: HC

The Gauhati High Court has asked the government to clear two animal corridors  of the Kaziranga National Park within two months which will affect over 350 families. Hearing a PIL by Mrinal Kumar Saikia, a division bench of the court acting Chief Justice K Shredhar Rao and Justice PK Saikia asked the government to clear Bandordubi and Deusurchang from illegal settlers within two months. According to government document, Bandordubi area alone has at least 168 families in addition to 190 other families are residing in Deusur area. Despite the court order for clearing the areas the government failed to follow it citing technical and natural reasons.  

Assam girl rescued in Mizoram

The Mizoram police have arrested a person more than a week after he kidnapped a minor girl in Aizawl. The girl was rescued his captivity on Sunday. The 53 year old man allegedly kidnapped the 7-year-old girl from Harinagar village on October 3 from a hospital where the girl’s mother was undergoing treatment. He took the girl for fetching medicine and took her way. Then the mother moved police on October 6 forcing the police to launch a search operation. Acting on a tip off, a joint team of Assam and Mizoram police launched an operation with the help of the Harinagar villagers.
