JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

In a rare case, President Pranab Mukherjee has commuted death sentence of a murder convict to life imprisonment in Assam.Sources in Delhi told Assam Times that the death sentence Man Bahadur Dewan in Dibrugarh district has been commuted to life imprisonment.He was sentenced to death for killing his wife Gauri and two minor sons, Rajib and Kajib apart from killing one o his 13 years back.Then he surrendered before the police in September, 2002.The President is said to have relied upon the Home Ministry’s suggestion to take be soft.

Assam BJP MPs are not at all happy with the Centre’s decision not to accord ST status for six ethnic communities a year before the assembly polls.The MPs have started mounting pressure on the tribal affairs ministry to reconsider the decision.A senior party leader and MP told Assam Times that if the government proceeds this way the party will have to pay heavy price in the assembly polls early next year. “It would leave negative message before the people. The killer swine flu claimed yet another life when a woman lost her life in Guwahati on Wednesday. The 25-year-old woman died at the Narayana Hrudalaya Hospital in Guwahati a few days after she was shifted from a private hospital in Biswanath Chariali. A House committee will probe a string of anomalies in the Public Works Department. Ganamukti Sangram is all set to hit the streets demanding ST status for six ethnic communities a few days after the Centre rejected the ten year long demand. The Akhil Gogoi-led new political party is waiting to launch the agitation in a big way from March 31 if the government fails to announce policy decision by then. “We won’t allow these six communities to be ignored by Delhi and Dispur. We demand measures to uplift these people. ST status is the best possible measures,” said a KMSS leader.“We don’t understand why the NDA government has failed to keep its poll promises,” said the KMSS leader who is taking a prominent position in the new political party.
