JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Prez commutes capital punishment

In a rare case, President Pranab Mukherjee has commuted death sentence of a murder convict to life imprisonment in Assam.Sources in Delhi told Assam Times that the death sentence Man Bahadur Dewan in Dibrugarh district has been commuted to life imprisonment.He was sentenced to death for killing his wife Gauri and two minor sons, Rajib and Kajib apart from killing one o his 13 years back.Then he surrendered before the police in September, 2002.The President is said to have relied upon the Home Ministry’s suggestion to take be soft.

Encephalitis toll alarming

Despite preventive measures, there has been steep rise in the number of death due to Japanese Encephalitis in the state.Disclosing this in the assembly on Thursday, health minister Dr Nazrul Islam said that 521 people died in JE during the last four years since 2011.. According to the minister in 2014 alone, 165 people lost their lives in the state. He said the number of JE victim in 2011 was 115. In 2012, the toll marginally decreased but only to increase again in 2013 with 134. 

Dispur opposes SNA shifting

Dispur will not allow the Centre to shift the North East Centre of Sangeet Natak Akademi from Guwahati to Agartala.Admitting the Centre’s move, cultural affairs minister Bishmita Gogoi informed the assembly on Thursday that Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has already written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reconsider the decision.Apart from it, the chief minister said has already taken up the matter with Union minister for cultural affairs.She told the assembly that she recently met SNA Secretary they talked of an interim arrangement at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra society.She said that the state government has also agreed to arrange suitable plot of land for establishment of permanent...

ST status: BJP MPs unhappy

Assam BJP MPs are not at all happy with the Centre’s decision not to accord ST status for six ethnic communities a year before the assembly polls.The MPs have started mounting pressure on the tribal affairs ministry to reconsider the decision.A senior party leader and MP told Assam Times that if the government proceeds this way the party will have to pay heavy price in the assembly polls early next year. “It would leave negative message before the people. Woman dies of swine flu

The killer swine flu claimed yet another life when a woman lost her life in Guwahati on Wednesday. The 25-year-old woman died at the Narayana Hrudalaya Hospital in Guwahati a few days after she was shifted from a private hospital in Biswanath Chariali. This is the first case of swine flu death from Sonitpur district. With this, the H1N1 toll has gone up to 4 including two Army men.

Rhino census underway in Kaziranga

Despite being riddled by non stopped rhino poaching incidents, a rare dose of good news awaits Kaziranga National Park.The world heritage site is likely to see the increase in the rhino population. House panel to probe PWD anomalies

A House committee will probe a string of anomalies in the Public Works Department. Disclosing this on the floor of the House Speaker Pranab Kumar Gogoi said on Wednesday that the House panel will look into the alleged irregularities in inviting tenders from contractors . The Speaker’s announcement quelled AIUDF, AGP and BJP members who took on the PWD minister alleging many irregularities. Gogoi in his ruling said,” If someone is bidding with a lower rate than the fixed price, then obviously he will do an inferior work." BJP MLA Manoranjan Das alleged that a section of contractors bid the tenders at lower prices of the fixed rate and eventually they get the work. Waiting for ST status policy decision

Ganamukti Sangram is all set to hit the streets demanding ST status for six ethnic communities a few days after the Centre rejected the ten year long demand. The Akhil Gogoi-led new political party is waiting to launch the agitation in a big way from March 31 if the government fails to announce policy decision by then. “We won’t allow these six communities to be ignored by Delhi and Dispur. We demand measures to uplift these people. ST status is the best possible measures,” said a KMSS leader.“We don’t understand why the NDA government has failed to keep its poll promises,” said the KMSS leader who is taking a prominent position in the new political party.  

NRC dominates AASU convention

NRC, Assam Accord implementation and deportation of Bangladeshi immigrants are dominating the All Assam Students Union’s Dudhnoi Convention which is underway. Talking to Assam Times, AASU leaders said that they have already finalize action plan to fight for pressurizing Delhi and Dispur to flawlessly update the NRC apart from sealing the Indo-Bangla border to prevent further influx from across the border.The entire course of action, however, would be announced at the open session on Thursday, said a senior AASU leader. Some other resolutions are waiting to be passed in the executive body meeting of the state’s influential student organization.

Akhil demands special status for Assam

Hardly a week after it was floated, the Ganamukti Sangram Samity has demanded special status for Assam under Article 371 (A) of the Constitution.In its maiden press statement, the new political party further demands Scheduled Tribe status for six ethnic communities which was denied by the Centre a few days back.Party leader Akhil Gogoi maintains that only the special status is the best possible way to ensure the exclusive rights of the people of Assam over land and all other natural resources.Gogoi further believes that ST status is required to uplift the Koch-Rajbongshi, Tai Ahom, Moran, Muttock, Chutia and tea tribe communities.
