JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Waiting for ST status policy decision

Ganamukti Sangram is all set to hit the streets demanding ST status for six ethnic communities a few days after the Centre rejected the ten year long demand. The Akhil Gogoi-led new political party is waiting to launch the agitation in a big way from March 31 if the government fails to announce policy decision by then. “We won’t allow these six communities to be ignored by Delhi and Dispur. We demand measures to uplift these people. ST status is the best possible measures,” said a KMSS leader.“We don’t understand why the NDA government has failed to keep its poll promises,” said the KMSS leader who is taking a prominent position in the new political party.  

NRC dominates AASU convention

NRC, Assam Accord implementation and deportation of Bangladeshi immigrants are dominating the All Assam Students Union’s Dudhnoi Convention which is underway. Talking to Assam Times, AASU leaders said that they have already finalize action plan to fight for pressurizing Delhi and Dispur to flawlessly update the NRC apart from sealing the Indo-Bangla border to prevent further influx from across the border.The entire course of action, however, would be announced at the open session on Thursday, said a senior AASU leader. Some other resolutions are waiting to be passed in the executive body meeting of the state’s influential student organization.

Akhil demands special status for Assam

Assembly polls before May ’16

Days are not far for assembly polls in Assam. The Election Commission is fully prepared to hold the next assembly polls before May 2016.Talking to reporters in Guwahati on Tuesday, Chief Election Commissioner HS Brahma said that the country’s poll panel would hold the polls in time.He said that all voters would get identity cards this time which would be required to exercise their franchise.
