JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Kidnapped schoolboy killed

 In a bizarre incident that sends shickwaves across the state, a few miscreants killed a school boy for not getting ransome from his parents. The gruesome incident took place in Mongoldoi where Class VI student Nipon Nath was kidnapped a couple of days . The abductors sent message to his parents demanding Rs 10 lakh. But they killed Nipon and dumped the body in Sipajhar to be recovered on Monday morning. Police investgation is going on. But nobody has so far been arrested in this connection.     

Deka leads BJP in assembly

Deka is new leader on the floor. Earlier,  Prasanta Phukan took the lead in the legislative team on the floor. BJP has also appointed Manoranjan Das as the Chief Whip of the party and Dilip Moran as the Secretary of the legislative team.  

Budget session begins

The Assam assembly begins its budget session on Monday with a stormy note with the Opposition taking on the government alleging failure on all fronts. As the House met at 9 in the morning with question hours, the Opposition parties started launching scathing attack on the government citing the issues one by one. Despite repeated order from Speaker Pranab Gogoi, the legislators from AGP, BJP and AIUDF held the government responsible for the issues confronting the state for years. No cultivable plot for industry: Govt

The Assam government on Saturday made it plain and simple that under no circumstances it will acquire agricultural land for industrial purpose. But in the same breath, it clarified plans to reclassify the unused land, where farming never took place. The government cleared its position after it talked to the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti leadership in Dispur. Talking to Assam Times, the government officials denied any intention to give agricultural land to industrialists. They said that the intention was only to correct this and wants to reclassify those lands as "non-agricultural" so that "some developmental works" can be carried out in future.

AGP stage dharna in Dispur

The Asom Gana Parishad leaders stage dharna in front of the Assam Assembly on Monday in protest against the retain the Bangladeshi vote bank by Congress government in Assam and the BJP-led government at the Centre.  AGP legislators also join the dharna along with other leaders demanding immediate halt in the move for asylum to the Bangladeshi immigrants who came to Assam after 1972.      

Guwahati in smart city list!

Good news for Guwahatians. Despite unending problems confronting Guwahati for the last couple of years, the premier north eastern city is going to a smart one if    Tarun Gogoi is to be believed. The chief minister on Saturday asked his Urban development department to prepare the modalities of 'Smart City' as Guwahati has found a place in the list of 100 such cities envisioned by the Centre. SC to hear NRC petition on Monday

The Supreme Court is expected to make a landmark judgment on Monday on steps to update NRC which help Assam detect and deport the Bangladeshi immigrants. A division bench of the apex court comprising Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice MY Eqbal is all set to the take up the petition bearing No 274/2009 moved by Assam Public Works demanding judiciary’s intervention to update the Nation Registrar of Citizens.  

AHRC notice to Govt on encephalitis

The Assam Human Rights Commission has written to Dispur seeking a report on the alleged failure to firmly deal with the outbreak of Japanese Encephalitis that killed atleast 100 people during that last couple of days. The state rights panel issued the notice to chief secretary JS Khosla taking a suo moto cognizance of a petition filed by Dr Zoii Nath Sarma alleging violation of human rights by the concerning authorities by not taking preventive measures. The Commission has asked for a report of the inclusive enquiry into the allegations within 30 days.  

Contain draught like scene: CM

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has asked agriculture department to come up with measures to contain the situation. Gogoi on Friday asked for a report on it from Secretary Amlan Barua. This was followed by agriculture minister Nilamani Sen Deka’s meeting with senior officials of his department took stock of the situation prevailing in the eight districts following scanty rainfall. Deka directed the officials to take all possible measures to cope with the situation and sought detailed reports from the district Deputy Commissioners and the agriculture officials of the affected districts.  

ULFA militant held in Majuli

Majuli police on Friday captured an anti-talk faction ULFA militant two weeks ahead of the Independence Day. Identified as Deepak Patowary alias Deepak Bora, the 36 year old ULFA man was arrested in the wee hours during an operation in the river island. Acting on a tip off that an ULFA militant was hiding at Borguri Joorbil, police launched an operation on Thursday midnight where he was captured in the wee hours. Six ULFA(I) extortion notices and two mobile hand sets were recovered from the militant.  He joined ULFA in 1996 and later surrendered in 2007 and returned to insurgency in 2011 by joining Paresh Baruah led ULFA(I) faction for recruitment and extortion drives in Majuli,...
