JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

 Thousands of students took out a huge human chain in Guwahati on Saturday to reiterate their demands to complete the 4-lane National Highway at an earlier date. Talking to Assam Times, senior AASU leaders said that they won’t resort to road blockade to harass the common people during the human chain in the city.     They said that they are disappointed to have observed that only in Assam, a central government project is allowed to move at a snail’s pace.  AASU leaders further said that authorities must complete the entire project within the stipulated time-frame.

Amid an uneasy development within the Congress Legislature Party, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi tore apart Siddique Ahmed a day after the border development minister threatened to boycott the upcoming Assam Assembly demanding leadership change. Stunned by the revelations of a section officials having close touch with some illegal settlers in Guwahati, Dispur is ready to probe the allegations.  Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who addressed a press conference in Dispur on Friday sad that his government will set up an inquiry committee to find out the alleged nexus between officials of different government agencies and encroachers in the capital. The enquiry panel would be set up soon to see the nexus between officials of different bodies. Nobody would be spared if found to be involved in violating the law, said Gogoi.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Friday accused the Modi government of pleasing big industrialists and lowering the benefits of social schemes meant for the poor people. The dissident Congress legislators have mounted more pressure on the party high command to replace Tarun Gogoi as chief minister. Sources told Assam Times that led by health and education minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, the dissident MLAs and ministers threatened to float a separate party if the party high command refuses to hold the CLP meeting.  They said that they are disappointed with party high command for retaining Gogoi as chief minister. Further they have been waiting for party high command’s clear cut position. But there is no such indication.   
 An eviction team cleared a huge area on Zoo Road demolishing several constructions on Friday. Officials deployed in the drive against illegal settlers told Assam Times that the drive would continue until the city is made free of encroachment.    The drive would resume on Saturday where some other huts and pucca houses would be evicted.
