JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Barnijora repolling in progress

Repolling is going on at the Barnijora booth on a brisk noteon Monday where over 1500 electorates are seen waiting in huge queue to exercise their franchise again from 7 in the morning.     A sensational rigging expose by a private satellite news channel forced the Election Commmission to order repoll in this booth under the Jalukbari assembly segment. Notably, a VDP member who got deployed outside the booth managed to go inside it and allegedly pressed the EVMM button on behalf of a few voters in full view of the polling officials on Thursday. Jailed presiding officer critically ill

The Bornijora polling booth presiding officer Paresh Hazarika fell critically ill hours after he was remanded to judicial custody on Sunday.Hazarika fell on the ground as soon as he along with five other persons arrested in connection with the vote rigging were brought to the jail in the evening.Hazarika was rushed to the hospital where his condition is said to be critical.  He along with four other polling officers and a VDP member were arrested by the Baihata police on Saturday morning and on Sunday the Rangia sub-divisional magistrate remanded to judicial custody for 14 days.    

Rigging: 6 accused sent to jail

A lower court in Rangia sent six people to jail a day after they were arrested in connection with vote rigging at a polling booth in Guwahati constituency where they were deployed on Thursday.Identified as presiding officer Paresh Hazarika and polling officials Rakhal Chandra Choudhury, Abhay Nath Bezbarua and Rupam Malakar at Bornojora booth, they were remanded to judicial custody after Baihata police produced before the Rangia sub-divisional magistrate on Sunday.Apart from them police produced Bimal Boro, the VDP member who pressed the EVM button on behalf of a few voters. Repolling ends peacefully

Repolling is over in altogether 15 booths covering four Lok Sabha constituencies on Sunday. The fresh polling was by and large peaceful. There was no report of any incident during these 10 hours.Voters in large number were seen waiting to vote in the polling booths till the end of the polling which began at 7 in the morning.The booths include three in Guwahati, nine in Kokrajhar and two in Nagaon and one in Mongoldoi constituency where polling was disrupted because of EVM malfunctioning.Guwahati polling booths include No 1 Hengrabari LP School, No 180 Ganeshpara School and Ramchariny School under West Guwahati Assembly segment.The repolling comcluded peacefully at 5 in the evening.

Rigging: Akhil ups ante on Agnihotri

KMSS on Sunday demanded immediate arrest of Guwahati returning officer Ashotosh Kumar Agnihotri in connection with the vote rigging in Jalukbari on Thursday.Addressing press conference in Guwahati, KMSS president Akhil Gogoi alleged that the incident did not took place without his knowledge.Gogoi also demanded repoll in the entire Jalukbari assembly segment and a CBI probe into the entire incident in view of clear evidence of rigging.“Earlier we raised doubts over the functioning of the electronic voting machines. But the election authorities hardly listened to us,” said Gogoi.

AGP demands CBI probe into rigging

The Asom Gana Parishad alleged that a section of government employees were engaged in rigging at Bornijora booth in the Lok Sabha polls which is a fit case for CBI probe.Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Sunday, party president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta said that these incidents have turned the entire poll process into a farce.Mahanta further opposed the arrest of the person who photographed the entire incident in his camera at the polling station when a VDP member allegedly pressed the EVM buttons on behalf of a section of voters.
