JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

A KMSS sustained serious burn injury after his self immolation attempt in Guwahati on Monday in protest against the land patta distribution function in the city.  The bizarre incident took place at 10-30 in the morning in front of the state secretariat when the KMSS activists set himself on fire after pouring kerosene on his body.Security forces on duty doused the fire promptly and rushed the KMSS activist to GMCH. District administration officials called it a serious attempt and that action would be taken against the leadership.
A massive security is in place in Guwahati to foil the KMSS agitation for land pattas to the people living in the government land.Security forces are fanning atop the hills areas in the city looking for the KMSS protesters who are set to hit the streets on Monday.Bamboo barricades are being brought to Koinadhara, Sankardev Kalakhetra, Dispur Last Gate and SixMile to block the KMSS protestors who are expected to come out in large number in protest against the land patta distribution function at Sankardev kalakhetra on Monday morning.      
Curfew has been relaxed in Borgang and Bedeti areas in Sonitpur district for 12 hours in view of the ongoing HSLC and HS examinations on Monday.According to the district administration, the situation is under control and curfew would be reimposed as situation warrants.Curfew was clamped following a fresh orgy of violence when protesters clashed with security forces during a road blockade in protest against failure to arrest the Chauldhuwa culprits.
Several persons have been injured when security forces sprang upon a group of KMSS activists in Khanapara in Guwahati on Monday morning.Security forces resorted to lathicharge to disperse over 100 KMSS protesters who were marching towards Koinadhara in protest against the decision to issue land pattas to only 500 people at a function in Sankardev Kalakhetra.
Forest guards in Kaziranga recovered the rhino killed by poachers on Sunday evening.The carcass was spotted near Borbhag forest camp in Burahpahar range of the world heritage site. The horn was missing.Poachers were believed to have killed the animal and took away its horn before they locked in an encounter with the forest guards on Sunday evening. There was no casualty in the gun battle.Forest guards rushed to the spot as soon as they came to hear the sounds of gun shots.  But the poachers managed to flee from the spot.
Jintul Talukdar, BhawanipurIn a bizarre incident that sends shockwaves across the state, a woman committed suicide after killing her minor daughter on Sunday.The incident took place at Bhawanipur in Bajali Mridula Patgiri strangulated her 16 month old daughter Sagorika and then committed suicide by hanging at a fan inside her room in the absence of her husband in the morning.Local residents suspect it a fall out of domestic quarrel. But only police investigation would unearth the truth.
Security forces claimed to have killed a hardcore NDFB(S) militant at an encounter in Sonitpur district on Sunday.The encounter took place in Moinajuli area at 7 in the afternoon where the militant died on the spot. Police further claimed to have recovered weapons from his possession.    
Poachers are suspected to have killed one more rhino before facing an encounter with forest guards in Kaziranga on Sunday.On hearing sounds of gunfiring at Burhapahar range of the world heritage site, forest guards rushed to the spot and locked in a grim gun battle with the poachers at Saralibeel area in the evening. Poachers managed to flee from the spot. Details are awaited.  
A businessman anaged to foil the kidnap attempt in Sonitpur district on Sunday evening.The incident took place at Alichinga in Dhekiajuli where three armed youths tried to lift businessman Basu Dey at around 8 in the evening.As the trio tried to dreg him into a bike, Dey cried for help where the local villagers in large number came out forcing the suspected NDFB-S militants to leave the spot.Police came to the spot and investigation is going on.     
Tension seems to have been escalating further in Sonitpur on Sunday a day after 4 more bodies of missing villagers were found.Apprehending breakdown in law and order situation, the district administration has clamped curfew in Borgang and Bedeti areas after protesters clashed with police in the afternoon.The clash broke out when police tried to disperse thousands of people who blocked the roads leading to Arunachal Pradesh in protest against the failure to arrest the Chaudhuwa massacre.The protesters set on fire Arunachal Pradesh bound vehicles of security forces.
