Assam remembers INA's Umesh Chandra Devchoudhury

All India Patriotic Forum, Assam branch on Saturday remembered Umesh Chandra Devchoudhury, who joined the Indian National Army (Azad Hind Fauj) under the leadership of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in 1943 and fought many battles for the motherland. Probably the last INA soldier from Assam, Devchoudhury passed away on December 11, 2013 at his residence in Patacharkuchi of lower Assam. A Lieutenant of INA, Devchoudhury maintained an active life till his demise at the age of 97.

In a formal memorial meeting held in Guwahati Press Club various speakers highlighted the spirit of patriotism shown by Devchoudhury and his colleagues who led an eventful struggle in various south and southeast Asian places like Singapore, Rangoon, Arakan front etc. With his sincerity and commitment, Devchoudhury elevated himself up to the level of Lieutenant in INA and led his troop against the British imperial forces mostly on the India-Myanmar border in 1944 to make India an independent nation.

Speakers including freedom fighters Jatin Goswami & Ganesh Chandra Das, Prof Rabin Devchoudhury, Ajay Dutta, Jaharlal Saha, Umakanta Bhattacharya, Jagadindra Raichoudhury, Rupma Barua, Hiten Mahanta, Nava Thakuria, KN Devchoudhury, Pramod Kalita etc paid their heartiest tributes to the departed soul.

Before the meeting, floral tributes were also paid to Devchoudhury and two patriotic songs ‘Bande Mataram----’and ‘O Mor Aponar Desh ----’were also sung by the participants in the memorial meeting.

Lockdown extended till May 31

New Delhi : The Center has extended the lock down till May 31 with a slew of relaxations.  But these relaxations were on expected line.  PM Narendra Modi kept the nation on guessing giving hint of the lock down with exceptional standard operating procedures. Civilian hurt in Nagaon police firing

Two persons sustained serious injury when security forces sprang upon a group of people who spilled into the streets defying lock down at Barbazar area in Nagaon town on Friday. The injured were rushed to a Nagaon Civil Hospital where both were stated to be out of danger. Sonowal wants extension of lockdown

GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that he has urged the Centre to allow the state to continue the lock down by 2 more weeks. Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Friday, Sonowal said that many areas in the state are still vulnerable. He further said that the extended lockdown period would help them contain the possible outbreak of more such cases following the arival of thousands of people who were remaining stranded outside the state. Guwahati: As many as 200 families in a few tiny hamlets in Sonapur area in the outskirt of Guwahati heaved no less sigh of relief as they came to receive some amount of essential commodities at their door steps.  Country North Eastern Regional Agricultural Marketing Corporation Limited (NERAMAC). Real face of yeoman service pathetic

Guwahati: The BJP-led coalition government's much hyped yeoman service stands exposed with one after returnees disclosing their miseries.  The journey by bus to the state was not at all free.  The quarantine in hotels in Guwahati lack basic facilities.  That too for Rs.5000. A returnee here disclosed the zero medical treatment facilities for her along with two others at a hotel where she was lodged on Thursday.  She along with two are returnees from Kota in Rajasthan along with 200 other. 3 more test COVID19 positive

Guwahati: Three more people in the state have tested positive in COVID19. This was what health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said in Guwahati on Friday. The trio was among the 40 others who started  Silchar from Ajmeer by a bus two days back.  Five tested positive on Thursday while the trio received confirmation report on Friday.

Guwahati likely to slip into orange zone

Guwahati: The confirmation of 4 COVID19 cases apart from death by the killer virus is likely to put Guwahati into the orange zone.  The Centre is expected to confirm it by Saturday. COVID19 claims second life

Guwahati: The killer COVID19 has claimed yet another life on Thursday which came to light only on Friday. The victim is said to have been a 16-year-old girl who belonged to the family of a staff of B Barooah Cancer Institute who died on Thursday.
