Actor joins TMC

Noted film actor Biju Phukan joined Trinamool Congress in presence of Mamata Banerjee at a function in Guwahati on Wednesday.

Phukan, who once contested the assembly polls from AGP told the TMC boss that he was prepared to fight the polls.

People thronged in thousands at the sarusajai Stadium to attend the TMC rally where Mamata Banerjee drew appreciation.

Ms. Banerjee clarified, while addressing a party rally in Guwahati, that Trinamool Congress was a part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government when it was headed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee but her party would not support any party that incites communal violence and hatred on the basis of religion, caste, creed or community.

ST status: BJP MPs unhappy

Assam BJP MPs are not at all happy with the Centre’s decision not to accord ST status for six ethnic communities a year before the assembly polls.The MPs have started mounting pressure on the tribal affairs ministry to reconsider the decision.A senior party leader and MP told Assam Times that if the government proceeds this way the party will have to pay heavy price in the assembly polls early next year. “It would leave negative message before the people. Woman dies of swine flu

The killer swine flu claimed yet another life when a woman lost her life in Guwahati on Wednesday. The 25-year-old woman died at the Narayana Hrudalaya Hospital in Guwahati a few days after she was shifted from a private hospital in Biswanath Chariali. This is the first case of swine flu death from Sonitpur district. With this, the H1N1 toll has gone up to 4 including two Army men.

Rhino census underway in Kaziranga

House panel to probe PWD anomalies

A House committee will probe a string of anomalies in the Public Works Department. Waiting for ST status policy decision

Ganamukti Sangram is all set to hit the streets demanding ST status for six ethnic communities a few days after the Centre rejected the ten year long demand. The Akhil Gogoi-led new political party is waiting to launch the agitation in a big way from March 31 if the government fails to announce policy decision by then. “We won’t allow these six communities to be ignored by Delhi and Dispur. We demand measures to uplift these people. ST status is the best possible measures,” said a KMSS leader.“We don’t understand why the NDA government has failed to keep its poll promises,” said the KMSS leader who is taking a prominent position in the new political party.  

NRC dominates AASU convention

NRC, Assam Accord implementation and deportation of Bangladeshi immigrants are dominating the All Assam Students Union’s Dudhnoi Convention which is underway. Talking to Assam Times, AASU leaders said that they have already finalize action plan to fight for pressurizing Delhi and Dispur to flawlessly update the NRC apart from sealing the Indo-Bangla border to prevent further influx from across the border.The entire course of action, however, would be announced at the open session on Thursday, said a senior AASU leader. Some other resolutions are waiting to be passed in the executive body meeting of the state’s influential student organization.
