Actor joins TMC

Noted film actor Biju Phukan joined Trinamool Congress in presence of Mamata Banerjee at a function in Guwahati on Wednesday.

Phukan, who once contested the assembly polls from AGP told the TMC boss that he was prepared to fight the polls.

People thronged in thousands at the sarusajai Stadium to attend the TMC rally where Mamata Banerjee drew appreciation.

Ms. Banerjee clarified, while addressing a party rally in Guwahati, that Trinamool Congress was a part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government when it was headed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee but her party would not support any party that incites communal violence and hatred on the basis of religion, caste, creed or community.

Centre’s NO to ST status

The centre has rejected the demands for ST status to six ethnic tribes forcing many organizations to hit the streets.Ministry for tribal affairs sources told Assam Times in New Delhi that after a thorough study the authorities have  rejected the demands ST status for tea garden workers, Ahoms, Koch Rajbanshi, Chutias and Muttocks citing lack of laid down norms.The decision is set to run into a hail of protest in Delhi and Dispur. The demand was long standing and both Delhi and Dispur have been assuring these ethnic tribes of their due status for the last ten years.Both Congress and BJP promised S status for the 6 ethnic tribes for overall uplift.

AASU convention gets underway

Students are thronging in thousands at Dudhnoi to join AAS’s 16th Convention which gets underway on Monday.Local AASU organizers told Assam Times that over 5,000 delegates from different parts of the state are arriving in the venue to join the convention.Apart from AASU, many organizations have also sent representatives to make the convention a success.The convention assumes significance in view of adviser Dr Samujjal Bhattacharjee’s formal exit on Tuesday. The student body would elect another influential leader as adviser.

Samujjal to quit AASU

All Assam Students’ Union adviser Dr Samujjal Bhattacharyya is all set to quit politics. His exit would formally take place at the AASU convention in Dudhnoi on Tuesday.After his ceremonial exit, the AASU adviser would not join politics and would stay away from any electoral politics.The student leader was the AASU general secretary for three terms from 1989 to 1999. Later he was elected as advisor of the state’s powerful organization for two tenures. 

Ambani in clean Kamakhya mission

The country’s industrialist told chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Sunday that he would begin the clean India campaign from the ancient temple very soon.During his visit to the chief minister’s official residence Ambani told Gogoi that he would take care of the entire campaign.He has further offered to pay the expenses of the staff and workers engaged in the work.When requested, Ambani assured Gogoi of his support to set up a children’s museum in Assam. Tina Ambani would look after the entire project.

Ambanis visit Kamakhya

Noted industrialist Anil Ambani visited Kamakhya temple on Sunday and promised a slew of measures to uplift  the temple premises.Accompanied by his mother Kokilaben Ambani and wife Tina, Ambani offered puja at the ancient temple in presence of many dignitaries in the morning.Talking to Assam Times, the temple officials said that they requested him to revive the old water supply project in the entire area.Then he left for the official residence of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.

Hepatitis B vaccination in press club

Dispur Hospital has organized a Hepatitis B vaccination camp for scribes and their spouses in Guwahati Press Club on 5 April 2015 (Sunday). The camp will begin at 11 am and continue for one hour. Fraud in Assam police dragnet

Guwahati police got a dreaded fraud in its custody who duped many people in Assam taking crores of rupees promising benefits from the Prime Minister’s Office.A special team of CID has been interrogating the fraud to extract revelations.Another police team is in Delhi to get another fraud in its custody in a day or two. Known as Sudipta Chatterjee and Snehendu Jana, the duo allegedly cheated many people of crores of rupees under the fake banner of Prime Minister’s Office. Delhi Police caught the duo. recently.

Amit Shah coming in April

BJP president Amit Shah will be on a week long tour to Assam in April to study the party position a year ahead of the assembly polls.Talking to Assam Times, senior party leaders said that  apart from Assam, Shah is scheduled to tour the other north eastern states.Shah is keeping April 25 and 26 for Assam where he is set to review the party’s poll prospect. During his trip, the BJP president is set expected to strike pre poll alliance with other regional political parties.

Media Fellowships on TB Awareness

The State TB Cell, Assam in association with Guwahati Press Club has invited proposals for two media fellowships on Tuberculosis (TB) from mid-career journalists of the State for a period of two months (April and May 2015).Each selected journalist will be given Rs 20, 000/- (Rupees twenty thousand only) as the stipend for the entire period. The fellows should study and publish at least 4 articles in any popular daily or periodicals of Assam with the objective of spreading awareness on Tuberculosis incorporating various government sponsored facilitates including free diagnostic and treatments under Revised National TB Control Programme.Nearly 40,000 new TB cases have been put on treatment...

CBI probe into Farid case

The Nagaland government has recommended CBI probe into the mob lynching of Sayeed Farid Khan.The government has written to the country’s premier investigation agency seeking a thorough probe into the bizarre incident where  rape accused who hails from Assam was lynched by a violent mob on the street after being dragged out of the Dimapur Central Jail on March 25.Police have caught over 30 goons in this connection apart from disciplinary action against the jail authority.Various parties and organizations have called it a conspiracy against the non Naga people in Dimapur.
