Actor joins TMC

Noted film actor Biju Phukan joined Trinamool Congress in presence of Mamata Banerjee at a function in Guwahati on Wednesday.

Phukan, who once contested the assembly polls from AGP told the TMC boss that he was prepared to fight the polls.

People thronged in thousands at the sarusajai Stadium to attend the TMC rally where Mamata Banerjee drew appreciation.

Ms. Banerjee clarified, while addressing a party rally in Guwahati, that Trinamool Congress was a part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government when it was headed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee but her party would not support any party that incites communal violence and hatred on the basis of religion, caste, creed or community.

Huge amount of explosives were recovered from the busy Inter State Bus Terminus (ISBT) in Guwahati today.Three bags containing the explosives that included gelatin sticks, bar coils etc were found in a waiting room of the terminus during a regular check by the police. Police has taken into custody two persons for interrogation.
Acting on a tip off, ChildLine with the help of CID rescued 22 children bound for a Himachal from the Guwahati Railway station today. Alert was sounded in Assam over the dreaded swine flu after a student of the Fakhruddin Ahmed Barpeta Medical College was detected with the H1N1 virus today. The death of eminent educationist, social scientist, renowned geographer and author Mohammad Taher has been widely condoled across the state. Professor Taher breathed his last in a private hospital in Guwahati yesterday morning after a prolonged illness. He was 83. After obtaining his PhD degree from the Auckland University, Newzealand he joined the Gauhati University as a teacher. Described as a doyen of Indian Geography,Mohammad Taher retired from the Geography Department of the Gauhati University as Head and Dean of Faculty of Science in the 1990s. He authored more than 20 text books for geography students besides books on other subjects.
