Role of AASU in Assam

The All Assam Student’s Union (AASU) is a mouthpiece of the people of Assam. Since its inception the AASU has been fighting for the cause of Assam and making its presence felt politically in the entire nation. After the anti foreigner’s movement in Assam which was triggered off by infiltration of Bangladeshis from the border areas, a fear psychosis among the Assamese of losing their identities and cultural bondings led to the formation of AASU. The students of Assam united to form the AASU and lead the people of Assam in their struggle for protecting their identity. It resulted in the signing of the Assam accord. Though the AASU has undergone many splits and various other student organizations like Tai Ahom Students Union, All Bodo Student’s Union (ABSU) have come into existence, the AASU is still following the chosen path of being with the people of Assam and respecting the peoples’ democratic ideals. Though now its role has become even more manifolds with Assam facing newer challenges but the AASU still holds a beacon to the Assamese community during thick and thin high and low.

The AASU raises its voice every time it feels Assam is threatened by external or internal factors. Whether it is urging the central government to implement the Assam Accord, evict illegal Bangladeshis to save Assam or to protest for any injustice to its people, the AASU is the voice of Assam. It has also taken upon itself to uphold the Assamese culture and tradition and is working with the state and central government to maintain peace and unity in the state.

However it should be more vocal regarding the mayhem unfolded by extremists groups which has resulted in the loss of life of many innocent Assamese as well as Hindi speaking people. Instead of calling for bandhs to protest against issues it can resort to protest marches, dharnas etc for then people take notice of the cause behind the protests whereas bandhs not only effect the daily wage earners it also fails to register itself in the minds of the people as it becomes just another holiday for them. Bandhs also affect the state’s economy and slows down the development process of the state.

Moreover, women representation in AASU is quite negligible therefore it should take measures to ensure equal representation of female members by encouraging them.

The AASU being a student’s body has an important role to play in the lives of the student community therefore it should lead by example. It has done commendable work by recently felicitating meritorious student and therefore inspired them to achieve nobler goals.

The people of Assam have found a mouthpiece in the AASU and the future of Assam depends on these students who would carry forward the heritage of Assam by righteous means.

Well written.. The representation of lady is not so law in AASU..In different committe at district level or ancholik or branch level, there are various girl representatives. But yes in central body no girl representation is now. Moreover any student without relating any political party can be a part of AASU. We too thanx AASU as atleast for this organisation something can hope for the benefit of Assam. Even already various good and comandable works done by our loving this org, ie, AASU. Thank u to AASU too.

Bridging the gap: interface with young and old at DSB

As a part of the social project of Darwin School of Business (DSB), U Stan group which has done activities connection with ageing and old age organized an interactive session with the members of Amar Ghor and Kasturba Gandhi Memorial Trust. KPLT militants killed in Karbi Anglong

Three KPLT militants were killed when security forces launched an intensified operation in Karbi Anglong districts on Wednesday. The incident took place in the wee hours near Dolamara Tarapung area under Borpathar police station in the hills district. According to police, three AK-47 rifles and some ammunition were recovered from the trio. The militants were yet to be identified. Some others managed to escape.

Zero tolerance to encroachment: Ahmed

Assam Border Minister Siddeque Ahmed on Tuesday made it plain and simple that Dispur will never tolerate any encroachment on its land by any neighbouring states. During his visit to Lakhimpur on Tuesday, he directed the district authorities to evict all encroachments.He said that the government has decided to set up nine border outposts in the district along the 158 km border with Arunachal Pradesh. The minister held a meeting with Lakhimpur deputy commissioner, superintendent of police and other senior officials of the district to discuss the recent alleged encroachments by people of Arunachal Pradesh on Assam's land and constructions there later dismantled.

BNC delegation talks peace with Daimary

The Centre-NDFB peace process is set to be expedited when the a delegation of the Bodo National Conference will sit in talks with the Centre within the next couple of days.Led by Khampha Borgayari, the BNC delegation visited NDFB chairman Ranjan Daimary inside the Guwahati Central Jail on Tuesday morning where they tried to sort out the implications hindering the peace process.Later talking to reporters, Bargayari said that they would again meet prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Union home minister P Chidambaram to mount pressure on the Centre to formally initiate the peace process.

Blockade hits normal train services

Train services in parts of lower Assam remained paralyzed on Tuesday following an eight-hour rail blockade called by the All Assam Koch Rajbongshi Students' Union (AAKRSU).AAKRSU called the blockade demanding separate Kamatapur State and Schedule Tribe status of Koch Rajbongshis living in Assam.Hundreds of AAKRSU activists, led by its President Arun Ray, squatted at Salakati Railway crossing and railway tracks since morning with poster and banners and shouted slogans in support of their demands. Flood scene remains unchanged: toll 8

SBI steps to boost NE agri sector

The State Bank of India has increased its agriculture advances in Northeast India from Rs 1272 Crore in 2009-10 to Rs 1745 Crore. This was what SBI Chairman of SBI, Pratip Chaudhuri said on his two days visit to Northeast to take stock of the bank's activity in the region. Chaudhuri met Assam chief minister, Tarun Gogoi and discussed banks activity in the state. The credit deposit ratio (CD) of SBI in Assam has improved from 36 percent of 2010-11 to 38 percent in 2011-12. Presently Assam has a CD ratio of 39.5 percent. The number of Kisan Credit Card (KCC) disbursed by SBI has increased from 70539 to 139411 in Northeast India.

Assam CM assures due facility to media persons

Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi assured the media persons of basic minimum facilities recommended by the labour laws and statutory wage boards of the country. Gogoi who attended the Guest of the Month program of Guwahati Press Club on Monday also expressed his goodwill for the entire journalist fraternity and promised that he would do the needful for the press club as well.
