High Court Exposes Land Deal in Dima Hasao; AJYCP Calls Out Govt “Falsehood”

Guwahati: A storm has broken out after revelations in the Gauhati High Court that the Assam Government sold 3,000 bighas of tribal land in Dima Hasao to a private cement company at ₹2 lakh per bigha. The disclosure, made during a hearing yesterday, has drawn sharp reactions across the state.

The land in question, reserved under the Sixth Schedule for tribal communities in Umrangso, was allotted to Mahabali Cement Company. Following petitions from affected parties, Justice Sanjay Kumar Medhi’s bench took a stern view, asking how such transfer of protected land could take place. The court directed the Assam Government to file an affidavit within two days, producing all related documents of the sale.

The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) wasted no time in slamming the government. Party president Lurinjyoti Gogoi and general secretary Jagadish Bhuyan issued a statement alleging that the Himanta Biswa Sarma administration has been systematically handing over land belonging to indigenous and tribal people to corporate houses. “For long, we have said the government is eager to gift Assam’s land to capitalists. The Chief Minister denied it time and again. Now the High Court proceedings have laid bare the truth,” the AJP leaders declared.

They further warned that the government is preparing eviction drives over 55,000 bighas of land, of which nearly 50,000 belong to indigenous and tribal families—plots allegedly being lined up for industrial giants like Adani and Ambani. The party vowed to continue its fight against what it calls the “anti-people land policy” of the present regime.
