A 42-year-old migrant worker from Bihar remains missing after being struck by a moving train while crossing a railway bridge over the Dikhow River in Assam's Sivasagar district. SDRF teams continue an intensive search amid strong river currents.
NAZIRA, July 19, 2026 — A 42-year-old migrant labourer from Bihar is feared dead after he was struck by a moving train and plunged into the Dikhow River from a railway bridge connecting Nazira and Shimlaguri in Assam's Sivasagar district on Friday evening.
The incident occurred at around 7:15 pm when the man was reportedly walking along the railway track on the bridge. He was hit by an up-line express train, causing him to fall into the swollen river below, where he was swept away by the strong current.
Railway Police later recovered a bag from the bridge containing clothes, an Aadhaar card belonging to a woman identified as Geeta Devi, and a voter identity card of Tapeshwar Ray. Based on the recovered documents, the missing man was identified as Ram Bachan Ray (42), a resident of the Mahuli Choumukh area in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district.
Police sources said Ray had recently arrived in Sivasagar to work as a labourer at the railway station. As he had reportedly failed to secure employment, he was returning home and was heading towards Shimlaguri Railway Junction to board a train when the tragedy unfolded.
A search operation led by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) began early Saturday morning. The rescue effort is being supervised by Shimlaguri Police Officer-in-Charge Anup Dutta and Railway Police officer Krishna Bahadur Thapa.
Despite continuous searches, the missing labourer had not been traced till the filing of this report. Authorities said the operation would continue until he is located.
