Lafikul Islam Ahmed Murder Case Revives Political Controversy in Bodoland

KOKRAJHAR, September 7, 2026 — The murder case of former All BTC Minority Students’ Union (ABMSU) president Lafikul Islam Ahmed, which shocked Assam nine years ago, has once again stirred political controversy in the Bodoland region following the surrender of three accused who had remained absconding since the killing.

According to reports, the three accused surrendered before the CBI court at Chandmari in Guwahati on Saturday. Their surrender has prompted the ABMSU to renew its demand for a fresh investigation into the case and alleged that Lafikul’s killing was politically motivated.

The CBI had earlier filed a chargesheet in the case, naming Rinku Brahma, Bhadreshwar Basumatary and Dinku Mushahary among the main accused. The agency had announced a reward of ₹2 lakh each for information leading to the arrest of the three absconding accused.

Their surrender after nearly nine years has raised questions among Lafikul’s family members and the ABMSU over the circumstances surrounding the case and whether others may have been involved in the alleged conspiracy.

Lafikul’s younger brother, Mohidul Islam Ahmed, has urged the CBI to take the three accused into custody and conduct a fresh investigation into the circumstances surrounding his brother’s murder.

Mohidul said nine years had passed since the killing, but the family was still awaiting justice. Expressing faith in the CBI, he appealed to the investigating agency and the Assam government to ensure that the case reaches its logical conclusion.

He also demanded that anyone who allegedly ordered, planned or otherwise facilitated the killing be brought within the scope of the investigation and legal proceedings.

Meanwhile, the ABMSU held a press conference at Kajalgaon in Chirang district to reiterate its demands in connection with the murder of its former president.

Addressing the Chirang District Press Club, ABMSU central president Ali Azam Sheikh and general secretary Abu Zubair Mondal alleged that Lafikul Islam Ahmed was killed with the alleged patronage of the BPF.

The organisation described the prolonged CBI investigation as a “drama” and demanded a fresh probe into the case. It also called for the identities of the alleged conspirators and masterminds behind the killing to be made public.

The ABMSU further alleged that the murder was politically motivated and demanded that the Election Commission of India take action against the political party it alleges was involved, including a ban if such involvement is established.

The student organisation also demanded that the three accused who surrendered recently be tried through a fast-track judicial process and, if convicted, receive the maximum punishment prescribed by law.

The latest developments have once again brought the Lafikul Islam Ahmed murder case into the political spotlight, with his family and the ABMSU pressing for a renewed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing and accountability for all those allegedly involved.
