A general meeting of the Alumni Association of the historic Nazira Higher Secondary Multipurpose School was held on July 5 with the objective of strengthening ties among former students and building a vibrant and active alumni association.

Established in 1902 during the British era through the contributions of Nilakanta Hazarika and Banshidhar Hazarika, forefathers of the legendary cultural icon Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, the institution has completed a glorious journey of more than 125 years. Over the decades, the school has played a significant role in shaping society by imparting knowledge, values and ideals to generations of students. Its alumni have excelled in diverse fields across the country and abroad, bringing recognition to their alma mater.

The meeting, held in a classroom of the school, was presided over by Alumni Association President Ajit Khataniar, while Secretary Dilip Phukan explained the objectives of the gathering. More than 50 alumni from different parts of Assam attended the meeting.

Participants fondly reminisced about their student life, recalling their teachers and the academic environment from the 1950s to the present, creating a nostalgic atmosphere.

Distinguished alumni, including Executive President Dr Ajaylal Baruah, retired Army officer Brigadier Dev Baruah, retired teachers Prashanta Kumar Dutta and Jadu Dutta, and Executive Engineer Nripen Gogoi, shared their experiences and reflections.

The school's Principal, Ajay Gogoi, highlighted the importance of a strong alumni association and emphasised the role former students can play in supporting the institution's academic and infrastructural development.

The meeting also elected a new executive committee of the Alumni Association.

Senior alumni Dev Baruah, Jadu Dutta, Dr Ajaylal Baruah, Ajit Khataniar and Dilip Phukan were appointed as advisers. Prashanta Kumar Dutta was elected President, Mridul Mahanta as Executive President, and Nripen Gogoi, Abdur Rahman, Gopal Baruah and Mayur Kumar Gogoi as Vice-Presidents.

Dhiren Phukan and Syed Mohsin Hussain were elected Secretaries, while Bipul Borgohain, Prashanta Borthakur and Dilip Hazarika were chosen as Assistant Secretaries. Gun Gobinda Dutta was appointed Treasurer.

The executive committee also includes Pranabjyoti Dutta, Rafikul (Bhaiti) Rahman, Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta, Prakash Bora, Anima Goswami and Krishna Gogoi as members. Principal Ajay Kumar Gogoi will serve as an ex-officio member.

The meeting further resolved to expand the committee in the future and adopted several resolutions aimed at strengthening the association and supporting the continued development of the institution.
