Rs 520 cr for police modernization

 The Assam government has received a huge fund of Rs 520 crore from the Centre to modernize police since 2004.

The disclosure was made in the Assam Assembly on Monday by forest and environment minister Rockybul Hussain.

According to Hussain, "Out of the total amount, Rs 68.99 crore have been spent on purchasing of vehicles and Rs 92.49 crore were used for arms and ammunition."

Hussain said the police department currently has a total of 5,270 vehicles, of which 2,532 are two-wheelers and the rest are four-wheelers and other higher carriage capacity vehicles.

For running these vehicles, the Assam Police has spent Rs 384.55 crore in purchasing petrol and diesel between 2004-05 and 2013-14.

Kokrajhar: The BTC authority has suspended principal in-charge of Ramfalbil HS school Susil Kumar Basumatary for alleged involvement in the mid day meal and bicycle distribution scam. Basumatary received the order of his immediate suspension on Tuesday charging him with deliberately doing anomalies in the distribution of bicycles for the students. 'Basumatary has been involved with irregularities in implementation of MDM and some other school functions as prescribed from the concern department. TEZPUR: The Dibrugarh police probing the APSC scam arrested DTO Prasenjit Ghose on Monday. Ghose, whom the government recently transferred from Guwahati to Tezpur for his alleged involvement in the coal scam was picked from his office in the morning. He is being brought to Guwahati to be interrogated by the investigators who have so far arrested 35 ACS, APS and allied service officers in this connection. LAKHIMPUR: Yet another girl was kidnapped and gangraped before being dumped on the roadside in Lakhimpur sending shock and anger across the state on Monday. TINSUKIA: A local court in Tinsukia has ordered ten years rigorous imprisonment of a tea garden worker four years after he raped a girl of his locality. Judge PJ Saikia, further has imposed Rs 10,000 as compensation to the victim failing which he would have spend six more months in the jail. Identified a Krishna Karmakar, the tea garden worker in Silikha Tea Estate was arrested on the rape charge in 2013. The police chargesheeted him in 2015. GUWAHATI: Eight people sustained serious injury when a devastating fire broke out a semi commercial area in the outskirt of Guwahati on Monday. The incident took place in the wee hours at Bihapara in Goroimari when a house caught fire because of electric short circuit. Within half an hours the fire spread and engulfed as many as ten shops since many LPG cylinders exploded under the impact of the huge inferno.
