Hurdle in ST status for 6 communities
The move for ST status to six communities is set to hit a major road block with a circle of tribal organization leaders deciding to oppose it tooth and nail.
The Kokrajhar unit of the All Assam Tribal Sangha threatens to openly oppose the move saying that they won’t sit idle if the government endorses the demand.
The issue came up for discussion when the new executive body of the Kokrajhar unit of the organization met at the Serfanguri High School ground on Sunday.
The decision to oppose the ST status to 6 communities was taken during the 3rd triennial conference of Kokrajhar district unit of the Sangha held at Serfanguri High School ground on Sunday.
The tribal body further discussed the core issues of the tribal communities and illegal encroachment in tribal belt and blocks by non tribal communities and suspected nationalities.

A link man of NDFB-Songbijit faction was arrested by security forces belonging to police and army from Saraibil under Gossaigaon police station on Thursday in Kokrajhar district. Getting input about working of link man in the area, a joint team of security forces launched operation and managed to arrest the link man. He was identified as Rana Narzary of Nachraibil. He was involved with money collection, extortion, providing administrative support and information about movement of security forces to militant outfit organization. A census technique workshop on Golden Langur was organised by Kokrajhar Wildlife division in association with Primate Research centre NE India at Choraikola in Kokrajhar on Tuesday. A seven-years-old boy was succumbed to hospital following wall collapsed at Ghoskata Korida Madati sub-centre today in Kokrajhar district. According to family source, the boy identified as Bhim Brahma, son of Bircharan Brahma of Korida Madati village was received serious injuries following wall collapsed along the newly constructed wall at Korida Madati sub-centre this afternoon around 1 pm when he was playing with his friends. Two hard core cadre of the National Democratic Front of Boroland-Songbijit faction (NDFB-S) were killed in an encounter with security forces on Sunday at North Auzarguri under Serfanguri police station in a joint operation launched by police and army in Kokrajhar district.
