Prof Taher passes away

The death of eminent educationist, social scientist, renowned geographer and author Mohammad Taher has been widely condoled across the state. Professor Taher breathed his last in a private hospital in Guwahati yesterday morning after a prolonged illness. He was 83. 

After obtaining his PhD degree from the Auckland University, Newzealand he joined the Gauhati University as a teacher. Described as a doyen of Indian Geography,Mohammad Taher retired from the Geography Department of the Gauhati University as Head and Dean of Faculty of Science in the 1990s. He authored more than 20 text books for geography students besides books on other subjects.

16 injured at Kokrajhar road mishap

At least 16 passengers sustained serious injuries when  the bus in which they were travelling met with a road mishap in Kokrajhar district on Sunday. The mishap took place at New Amguri in Kokrajhar at night as the omini bus bearing registration AML 1646  bound for Kokrajhar from Bongaigaon. Akhil Gogoi arrested under NSA

Defying a statewide protest, the Assam government on Monday arrested Akhil Gogoi under the National Security Act in connection to an old case pending against the peasant leader in Kaziranga. Gogoi, whom Dibrugarh police arrested early this month for allegedly urging the people to remain prepared for an armed conflict with the government, was produced before a lower court which allowed the police to arrest him under the draconian Act that deals with the threat to internal security. Veteran Assamese film personality Abdul Majid passed away following a brief illness on Sunday. The end came at 7 in the morning at GNRC where he the award winning film actor was undergoing treatment.  Born in Jorhat in 1931, Majid started his career as actor in theatre in 1950. His name and fame started shining when he played a crucial role in Chameli Memshab which won national film award directed by Dr Bhupen Hazarika.  Since then he has been an indomitable figure in this field. Police file APSC probe status report

The Dibugarh police probing the APSC scam on Friday filed its status report before a special Court in Guwahati with details of 25 ACS and APS officers who allegedly paid cash to chairman Rakesh Paul and his closed associates to ensure selection. The police have furnished the forensic findings of the signatures of a section of the officers who got selection in APS, ACS and allied services resorting to bribing. Assam lawyer held in Delhi

The Delhi police have arrested a Supreme Court lawyer from Assam a couple of days after his car rammed into a biker after an altercation who  died in the hospital. Identified as Rohit Krishna Mahanta, was arrested on Friday hours after the youth who sustained injury died at a hospital. Fresh tremor rocks Manipur

A 3.1 magnitude tremor rocked the north eastern state of Manipur a couple of hours after the one of 4.4 magnitude striking no less struck panic on Friday. Violence mars Arunachal Pradesh bandh

An orgy of violence marred the 12 hour Arunachal Pradesh on Tuesday called in protest against the Centre’s move to accord citizenship to the Chakma and Hajong refugees in the north eastern state.
