BJP has appointed Jadav Chandra Deka as the new leader of the party in the Assam Assembly. party leadership has reorganised the legislative team to strengthen the operations within the Assembly. Deka is new leader on the floor. Earlier, Prasanta Phukan took the lead in the legislative team on the floor. The Assam government on Saturday made it plain and simple that under no circumstances it will acquire agricultural land for industrial purpose. But in the same breath, it clarified plans to reclassify the unused land, where farming never took place. The government cleared its position after it talked to the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti leadership in Dispur. Talking to Assam Times, the government officials denied any intention to give agricultural land to industrialists. They said that the intention was only to correct this and wants to reclassify those lands as "non-agricultural" so that "some developmental works" can be carried out in future.

The Assam Human Rights Commission has written to Dispur seeking a report on the alleged failure to firmly deal with the outbreak of Japanese Encephalitis that killed atleast 100 people during that last couple of days. The state rights panel issued the notice to chief secretary JS Khosla taking a suo moto cognizance of a petition filed by Dr Zoii Nath Sarma alleging violation of human rights by the concerning authorities by not taking preventive measures. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has asked agriculture department to come up with measures to contain the situation. Gogoi on Friday asked for a report on it from Secretary Amlan Barua. This was followed by agriculture minister Nilamani Sen Deka’s meeting with senior officials of his department took stock of the situation prevailing in the eight districts following scanty rainfall. Majuli police on Friday captured an anti-talk faction ULFA militant two weeks ahead of the Independence Day. Identified as Deepak Patowary alias Deepak Bora, the 36 year old ULFA man was arrested in the wee hours during an operation in the river island. Acting on a tip off that an ULFA militant was hiding at Borguri Joorbil, police launched an operation on Thursday midnight where he was captured in the wee hours.
