Gamlin joins as Delhi chief secy

Despite stiff resistance from Arvind Kejriwal and his lobby senior IAS officer from Assam Shakuntala Gamlin took over as Delhi chief secretery. 

Shakuntala, the daughter of former minister Lalit Doley and wife of former Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Jarbom Gamlin has alleged intimidation by a section of bureacrates not to take over. 

He was Lt Governor Jung who appointed her in the top post defying the chief minister's opposition who calls her corrupt.

A special Highway Patrol unit of the Assam Police is coming up to deal with accidents and crimes on National Highways. Official sources told Assam Times that the decision got chief minister’s nod at a meeting between Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi with Assam DGP Khagen Sarma. The DGP said that the meeting that the accident prone areas have been identified and highway patrolling would be focused on these areas. The overall flood situation remains unchanged on Thursday forcing the district administration to expedite relief and rescue operation. More and more areas have come under surging waters of the overflowing Brahmaputra and Demow rivers. According to official sources, the flood waters have affected 11, 471 people from 44 villages in Dhemaji and Lakhimpur districts. The worst-hit areas in Dhemaji district include Dhemaji, Jonai, Sisiborgaon where relief and rescue operations are in progress.
DoNER minister VK Singh will be on a two-days visit to Guwahati on Saturday. During his maiden visit, Singh will open the ICC-NEDFi-sponsored National Cold Chain Summit in Dispur. Towards the evening, Singh is expected to review the progress of the DoNER-funded projects. Before leaving Guwahati on Sunday, the former army chief is scheduled to address the 16th Convocation ceremony of the IIT, Guwahati. The entire function is being organized at the Bhupen Hazarika auditorium.                  
The drive to evict the illegal settlers in Guwahati seems to have mired in more controversy with the death of one more woman just before demolishing her hut on Wednesday. Identified as Pokhila Begum, the resident of Silsako area died at 11on Wednesday night hours after her hut was demolished during the eviction drive. Family members told Assam Times that the heart patient fell flat just before the arrival of the eviction team. Local residents failed to rushed her to the hospital after the eviction tem demolished the bamboo bridge.This is the second death during the on going drive to clear the wetlands in Guwahati.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that the eviction drive would not halt until and unless the illegal settlers are not evicted at all. Talking to reporters on Wednesday, Gogoi said that not even a single illegal settlers would be spared. He made it plain and simple that the entire drive against the rampant encroachment in the wetlands and hill tops would be carried out as per the law. District administration officials told Assam Times that altogether 46 pucca and huts were demolished apart from 21 temples ad mosque and 35 boundary walls to clear 14 bighas of land.
The ongoing drive to clear the encroached wetlands is likely to touch several high rise buildings in Guwahati in a day or two. According to sources, if this drive is allowed to continue a 17-storied building owned by Himatsingka Group may be demolished at Pathorquarry. Other under the scanner in Chachal include Ginger Hotel, Institute of Hotel Management, Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition, Hamja Properties are likely to be demolished.  The possibility grips a day after the eviction officials demolished a part of the Hyundai shpwroom in Ganeshguri on Tuesday. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is arriving in Guwahati on Wednesday after meeting president Pranab Mukherjee, prime minister Narendra Modi along with several other AICC leaders and Union ministers during the last three days. Gogoi on Tuesday met Mukherjee in New Delhi apart from calling on Union law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and Union human resources development minister.  
 FINER has welcomed the rail budget after it was tabled in Parliamnt by Sadananda Gowda on Tuesday. According to the industry body, the rail budget has not only rightly diagnosed the ailments of the Indian Railways, but also prescribed a clear roadmap and corrective actions ahead. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi pins hopes on a Rs 1,450 crore central fund for infrastructure development in10 state universities.
