Noted environmentalists and civil societies at a conference in New Delhi strongly advocated the involvement of local people in exploration of natural resources calling it a crying need of the hour in the north eastern region.
Convened by CENRs at the India International Centre Max Muller Marg in the capital on Friday, speakers after speakers in the conference urged the authorities to consider the impacts of the extraction of natural resources on the economy, environment and environment of an area.
The resource persons agreed that a set of policies has to be there especially for the north eastern part of the country. CENRs steering committee member Azeu Namcyn Hau and Narender Kumar from IPAC introduced the programme.
In her key note address, CENRs Convener Mary Beth urged the speakers to help the authorities and civil societies formulate a policy for extraction of natural resources with greater involvement of the local indigenous people.
WinG India Steering Committee member Helam Haokip spoke of gender and extractives while senior policy advisor from Greenpeace Priya Pillai outlined extractives and rights of local communities.
Director of Institute of Green Economy Dr. Pramod Kant spoke of environmental aspects of extraction of minerals and forest produce while the illuminating speech on the problems in mining sector in central part of the country came from Rajesh Nange Paon.
