HSLC: Monimoy tops HSLC exam, 2008; Mayuri does it in Second

Monimoy Bujarbaruah of Noonmati Jatiya Vidyalay tops the High Schools Leaving Certificate Examination conducted by the Board of Secondary Education, Assam in February and March, 2008.

According to the results available, Monimoy is followed by Mayuri Kalita of Soneswar Puthimari Higher Secondary School in Kamrup districtw while the third position goes to Rituraj Hazarika of Ananda Vidya Niketan High School of Nalbari, Jannatul Firdousi from Hatsingimari of Dhubri and Palashjyoti Baruah of Silapathar Don Bosco in Dhemaji district.

Altogether 107 candidates have occupied the top ten positions—all they are hailing from Kamrup, Nalbari, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Sonitpur and Barpeta districts. Altogether 1,40,618 candidates have cleared the examination out of 2, 39,606 and the percentage of successful candidates stands at 58.68, a ten year high this time. Last year the percentage was 54.93%. Altogether 17,084 candidates have secured first division while the number of candidate4s placed in second division is 29,820.

In the high Madrassa examinations, top position goes to Md Mustafa Ahmded from the Kawoimari Alhaj Nurul Hussain High Maddrassa of Nagaon district. Second one is Shahjamal Haque of Balbari High Maddrassa in Darrang district while the third position is occupied by Aakrarul Islam from Basbari Bangaljhar High Maddrassa in Goalpara district.

Flood scene deteriorates further

There is hardly any let-up in the overall flood scene. Incessant rainfall has turned the entire situation worse triggering fresh inundation and landslides in 23 districts. The death toll has gone up to 20. The 23 affected districts are Tinsukia, Darrang, Bongaigaon, Jorhat, Kamrup (Metro), Golaghat, Cachar, Kokrajhar, Nalbari, Sonitpur, Karbi Anglong, Dima Hasao, Nagaon, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Dhubri, Kamrup(Rural), Karimganj, Hailakandi, Morigaon, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji and Goalpara.

2 attacked; leopard killed in Golaghat

In yet another bizarre incident that leaves everybody surprise, a full grown leopard was killed after it attacked two villagers in Golaghat district on Wednesday. The incident took place in the morning at Kamarbandha's Basa Bharalua Kanimahal Chariali when the leopard first attacked one Mahen Saikia on his way to the paddy field. Another person, Prafulla Saikia, then went in search of the animal and he was attacked by the leopard. Prafulla also attacked the leopard with a machete which he was carrying with him. Fresh landslide claims 3 in Guwhati

Three members of a family were killed in a landslide following by incessant rains in Guwahati on Wednesday.The incident took place at Dhirenpara area where three members of a family, including two minor girls were buried alive. The deceased were identified as Masfida Begum (40) and her two daughters Jesmin (14) and Mainu (7).According to police, the incident took place in the when mud fell down from the adjacent hills and pressed a portion of the house against the ground, where the three were sleeping. The bodies have been recovered.

Flood: Gogoi orders relief and rescue

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday asked government officials to intensify rescue and relief of the people marooned in the second wave of flood and landslide. Gogoi, who is out of station told his officials over telephone that timely steps to evacuate the marooned people must be ensured. The mighty Brahmapurtra continues to flow above the danger level in many places plunging many people in to a era of danger. The government has already prohibited the movement of passenger ferries and boats on the Brahmaputra river. The National Disaster Response Force continues rescue operations in Majuli and in some areas of Sadiya subdivision in Tinsukia district.

National sanctuaries submerged in flood

Flood waters have submerged the Dibru Saikhowa National Park and Kaziranga National Park as the Brahmaputra and its tributaries are flowing above the danger level. This has forced the animals in the abode of wild horses to shift their base to high lands. On the other hand, Kaziranga National Park authorities have taken steps to protect animals including the prized one-horn rhinos. According to information, of the 168 camps in the park, flood water has affected 36 camps while special camps have been set up in the northern range to place the rescued animals. The park remains closed from May till October during the rainy season in Assam.

Flood threatens to wash away Majuli

Majuli, the Asia's largest river island faces a serious threat of being washed away. Days are not far if urgent treatment continues to elude. According to information, as many as 72 villages in Majuli have been submerged by the flood waters. The surging waters of the mighty Brahmaputra threaten to ravage the historic vaishnative monastery of Kamalabari. Many roads in the island have been submerged. In Jorhat, water has risen to dangerous levels at Nimatighat and the main dyke in the area is under threat of submergence. Around 400 families in the area have been affected.

Minor girls from Assam rescued in Delhi

Police rescued eight minor girls from placement agencies allegedly involved in human trafficking during a raid in Delhi. Altogether 4 persons, including a woman, have been arrested in this connection. The arrested have been identified as Ravinder Yadav, Pradeep Toppo, Vimal Kerketta and Babita. Acting on a tip-off police raided four placement agencies Babita Enterprises, India Maid Bureau, Deepika Placement Agency and Mission Welfare Society where the minor girls were rescued. They were allegedly involved in trafficking of the minor girls from Assam, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. Flood and landslip wreak havoc in Guwahati

Parts of Guwahati have been reeling under rainwaters following the incessant rains that lashed Guwahati on Monday night. The surging waters of the river Bharalu have submerged Naveen Nagar, Zoo Road, Pub-Sarania and Mathura Nagar with waist deep water. On the other hand, the killer landslip has claimed one more person in the city on Tuesday. The incident took place in Shantipur area in the wee hours.
