The centre is closely monitoring the prevailing law and order situation in Manipur. Violence will only compound the problem. Need of the hour is exercising restraint. This was more or less of what a home ministry team said in Manipur on Tuesday when they were on a stock taking visit to the restive north eastern state a month after 9 people died in a orgy of violence after the assembly passed three controversial bills.
The central team headed by Ashok Prasad, told the agitating people to exercise restraint when they talked to them after arriving in Churachandpur in the morning. Here is the excerpt of the speech for the agitating people.
"I can feel their pains and I understand their extend of bereavement. Loss of lives would always be a tragedy more so when it involved those who are plucked away in the prime of their lives. As a brother I share your tears and grief and as a friend I stand by you in your prayers for peace to the departed souls.
These are difficult time that we faced today. A difficult situation that can only be move forward with the help and sympathetic participations of all the stake holders. In fact the relative calm that we produced here today is a tribute to your understanding in the face of great tragedy. I appeal to all of you for continuation of this steering and I particularly the role play by the mothers and ladies of this area who have appeared in the forefront in helping to stabilized and pacified an extremely volatile situations.
I am also grateful to the elders and leaders of this area for their guidance and their directions that they have provided and continue to provide to steer us through this stormy period. I pray to them to continue to guide and advise us as we work toward the speedy resolution of the issue and the avoidance of further tragedy.
After this I'll be interacting with the different stake holders assisting and listening to their words of concerns and I will be taking their valuable suggestions. Some of you have already been interacting with the Central government and I am aware of their concerns and of the commitment of the government in Delhi to join prosperity and peace of this region with the rest of the country. It will be my endeavor to understand the nuances and complexity of the situation so that necessary and effective steps can be initiated at appropriate levels to bring back peace and stability to this area."

Yet another alleged incident of gangrape struck Guwahati. The main accused is in police custody. The incident took place at Maligaon where three youths allegedly gangraped and assaulted a 20 year old girl under the flyover at 11 at night. Local residents rescued the girl and caught the main accused who was handed over to the police. But the two others managed to flee from the spot. Later the girl was rushed to the Guwahati Medical College. Apart from interrogating the accused, police are waiting for the medical report to confirm it a case of gangrape.
Two back to back earthquakes struck Assam on Wednesday leaving 2 dead in Golaghat besides demolishing several school buildings in the district. The earthquake measuring 5.5 in the Rickhter scale originated at Borpothar along Golaghat-Karbi Anglong district border at 9.48 in the morning. Two persons died in Golaghat district as they were trying to run out of ther homes when the quake started shaking. Apart from this, cracks surfaced in several buildings housing schools. Properties worth one crore reduced to ashes when a Guwahati-based bar caught fire on Tuesday. The incident took place at the Midtown Bar Christian Basti probably because of electrical short circuit at 5.30 in the evening. Fire tenders reached the spot in time but it had to fight for almost 3 hours to bring the situation under control. Investigation is going on.
Guwahati Book Fair gets underway on Tuesday. Assam governor JB Patnaik open the 10 days book festival at the main venue in Chandmari. Patnaik in his address said that the event would help the state and its people strike a permanent deal with the book culture. Patnaik further gave away Assam Publication Board-sponsored award to noted educationist Dr Amalendu Guha.
Dr Bhupen Hazarika's multi faceted personality and his outstandina contribution came up for a touching discourse as Assam observed the second death anniversary across the state on Tuesday. Thousands of people thronged the Gauhati University campus to pay tribute to Dr Hazarika where the legendary music maestro was cremated 2 years back. Cultural troupes performed Bhupendra sangeet apart from religious functions organised by the goverment. Local residents in Nijorapar observed the death anniversary with a day cultural function. In yet another incident that can brew an orgy of group clash, unidentified miscreants vandalized idols of the goddess Kali in a few temples and puja pandals in Baksa district on Monday. The incident took place at Jwarkuchi in the district.The local people in large number blocked the Indo-Bhutan international road for a few hours in protest against the incident.Police and civil officials rushed to the area and appealed the people to maintain peace and harmony. The Assam government on Monday has announced an ex-gratia grant of Rs 6 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased and free medical treatment for the injured Gendamari. Six killed on the spot while another succumbed to injuries on the way to the GMCH. Nine other people have been undergoing treatment at the GMCH. The district has embroiled in violence since October 20 after Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council elections declared scheduled to be held in between November 13 and 25. The Non Rabhas demand exclusion of non Rabha areas from the Council.
A gory incident that left 7 people in Goalpara district bordering Meghalaya has forced the authority to clamp night curfew on Monday. Army and police are on patrolling duty at Gendamari area where suspected GNLA militants shot dead seven persons at a dewali function on Sunday night.The night curfew is in force from 7 in the evening to 6 in the morning. National Highway 62 between Damra in Assam and Dalu in Meghalaya as well as NH 51 between Paikan and Dalu along with Khargang-Resubelpara road are not under the purview of the curfew.
Two more youths were found dead at Jorabat in the outskirt of Guwahati on Monday. The semi-naked bodies were recovered from a culvert in the morning. Both the bodies bore some injury marks in the heads. Police investigation are going on.
Amid dewali pomp and gaiety, a youth was beaten to death in Guwahati on Sunday night. Identified as Pankaj Pathak, the youth was attacked by unidentified miscreants, probably followed by a road mishap at night. Pathak's body was found beside a temple in the morning. His bike was also found near the body.
