Scribes remember Dipak Mahanta

City based scribes and well wishers of Dipak Mahanta, who had recently died in a road mishap, paid homage to him in a function organized at Guwahati Press Club on Saturday. The attending journalists, while mourning Mahanta’s untimely death, emphasized on preservation of his creations for the benefit of future generation. Mahanta, who was a dedicated theatre activist and a journalist penned, designed and directed a number of plays including ‘Ulanga Roja’, ‘Malati Mem’, ‘Holi’, ‘Pinhole Camera’, ‘Gajapuria’, ‘Bhotaram Totaram’, ‘Aadipath’, ‘Dhaniramor Theatre’, ‘Kurma Avatar’, ‘Tejimola’, ‘Dhodar Alir Tender’, ‘Jadughar’ etc.

He also prepared scripts for hundreds of documentaries relating to various socio-cultural issues. Graduated from Biswanath College in 1979, Mahanta was partially involved with the profession of journalism during his productive days through different newspapers like ‘Mohajati’, ‘Agnigarh’, ‘Boodhbar’, ‘Natun Dainik, ‘Dainik Pratibimba’ and ‘Asomiya Pratidin’. He joined NewsTimeAssam as a producer and started television journalism career. Lately Mahanta was involved with AssamTalks as a senior producer.

The speakers including Manas Kumar Mahanta, Raman Bora, Sanjib Phukan, Mrinal Bora, Rupam Barua, Jagadindra Raichoudhiry, Nava Thakuria, Jesim Raja etc highlighted the simplicity of Mahanta, even though he had to fight all along for survival and creations.

Meanwhile, Mahanta’s family members have performed the rituals at his Tezpur residence with Adyashraddha today and Matsyasparsha scheduled for Monday next.

GUWAHATI: Hatigaon police have got remand of four persons in their custody for eight days who allegedly shot dead pulse trader Hemant Chorasia in the city. Identified as Mukuta Das, Nur Alom, Safikul Islam and Ramesh Yadav, they were picked up in this connection and were produced before a local court in Guwahati on Saturday. SHILLONG: Meghalaya police claimed to have killed GNLA commander in chief Sohan D Shira at a heavy gun battle in a remote place on Saturday.The encounter took place at Dobu near Sadagre where a group of GNLA rebels has been hiding for the last couple of days. Acting on some inputs, the Meghalaya police stormed into the area in search of the trouble mongers where the dreaded rebel was killed. Policemen deployed there have stepped up operation in search of his associate rebels who are believed to have been vanished from the spot.
PRASENJIT SAHAAGARTALA: The Election Commission has ordered repolling in six booths which is holding on February 26. In an order , the Election Commission secretary has asked the returning officers to hold the fresh polling one each in  Sonamura, Dhanpur, Teliamura, Sab room, Amtinagar and Kadamtula Kurti where EVM and VVPT malfunctioning was reported. GUWAHATI: Assam Assembly Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami has expelled Congress legislator Sherman Ali for creating uproar on the floor on Friday. Ali, the legislator from Baghbar was taken out of the floor by the marshal after he refused to remain calm at the instance of the Speaker.   The uproar took place after he raised a question on the pathetic plights of roads and bridges in his constituency. On hearing the reply from PWD minister Parimal Suklavaidya, an unhappy Ali raised some objections and slammed the minister. JORHAT: Police have arrested a medical student in Jorhat charging him with possessing fake ST certificate.
