Scribes remember Dipak Mahanta

City based scribes and well wishers of Dipak Mahanta, who had recently died in a road mishap, paid homage to him in a function organized at Guwahati Press Club on Saturday. The attending journalists, while mourning Mahanta’s untimely death, emphasized on preservation of his creations for the benefit of future generation. Mahanta, who was a dedicated theatre activist and a journalist penned, designed and directed a number of plays including ‘Ulanga Roja’, ‘Malati Mem’, ‘Holi’, ‘Pinhole Camera’, ‘Gajapuria’, ‘Bhotaram Totaram’, ‘Aadipath’, ‘Dhaniramor Theatre’, ‘Kurma Avatar’, ‘Tejimola’, ‘Dhodar Alir Tender’, ‘Jadughar’ etc.

He also prepared scripts for hundreds of documentaries relating to various socio-cultural issues. Graduated from Biswanath College in 1979, Mahanta was partially involved with the profession of journalism during his productive days through different newspapers like ‘Mohajati’, ‘Agnigarh’, ‘Boodhbar’, ‘Natun Dainik, ‘Dainik Pratibimba’ and ‘Asomiya Pratidin’. He joined NewsTimeAssam as a producer and started television journalism career. Lately Mahanta was involved with AssamTalks as a senior producer.

The speakers including Manas Kumar Mahanta, Raman Bora, Sanjib Phukan, Mrinal Bora, Rupam Barua, Jagadindra Raichoudhiry, Nava Thakuria, Jesim Raja etc highlighted the simplicity of Mahanta, even though he had to fight all along for survival and creations.

Meanwhile, Mahanta’s family members have performed the rituals at his Tezpur residence with Adyashraddha today and Matsyasparsha scheduled for Monday next.

The Nagaland Press Association (NPA) expressed worries over the formation of a State chapter of Newspapers Association of India (NAI) and submission of a memorandum to the State Governor PB Acharya recently at Raj Bhawan without engaging the local journalists of Nagaland based newspapers. “The memorandum to Governor Acharya was forwarded by one Monojit Singha, introduced as the convener of NAI’s northeast zonal committee. A 12 hour statewide Assam bandh hit normal life across the north eastern state on Monday. Called by six ethic groups reiterating the demand for scheduled tribe (ST) status the bandh was marked by a few stray incidents.Koch-Rajbongshi, Moran, Motok, Chutia, Tai Ahom and Adivasi tea garden workers communities have called the bandh alleging the government failure to keep the poll promises.Bandh supporters blocked many vital roads disrupting surface communication while some of them stopped the movement of traffic by burning tyres and prevented many shops and markets from opening during the 12 hours.
Society for Srimanta Sankaradeva (SSS) has started a five day long workshop on 'Preparation of Sanchipaat manuscript and painting in Sankari style' at Batadrava Than from July 2 in association with Batadrava Than Management Committee. There will be practical lessons in preparation of Sanchipaat and use of Hengul-Haital to paint art on Sanchipaat. Mridu Moucham Bora, Secretary of SSS is the main resource person of this workshop. We are highly surprised over the statement of Banwarilal Purohit, the honourable Governor of Assam in a public meeting at Maniyari near Barpeta. He has said in that meeting that Srimanta Sankaradeva did not do any thing to remove the malaise of child-marriage. This is an offensive statement to say the least. The Governor should have known that the saint reformed the entire society in Assam and brought the ethnic groups together by a unified cultural bond.
