Farewell to Dr. Arupa Patangia Kalita
Tangla College bids farewell to Sahitya Akademi Awardee Dr. Arupa Patangia Kalita on Wednesday. Speaking at the farewell function the outgoing HOD Dept. of English Dr. Kalita said "I and my husband Rajen Kalita who retired from the same college in 2007 were batchmates though we could select a city college even we were offered for faculties in Hemaprabha Girls College of Golaghat just opposite near my home.
"We decided to serve a small town. I was horrified by the backwardness (of Tanga) then, but it was a rewarding experience for me; it was the most wisest decision of my life that I cherish" said Dr Kalita. She further said that her spending of 39 years in Tangla gave a different pleasure.
Her recent novel "Tokra Bahor Sunar Beji" is based on Tangla and its suburbs.
She also said "No small place in Assam is as fascinating as Tangla, the town with two flowing rivers. The place has made me write novels and short stories."
Expressing her gratitude to the student community she said "students instil inspiration in me which make me younger every year."
Arupa Patangia Kalita was born in 1956 and studied at Golaghat Mission Girls High School and Debraj Roy college she did her MA in Gauhati University. She pursued her Ph.D. from Gauhati University. Besides novel, novella and short stories she writes on issues concerning women and society. Her novels and short stories have been translated to many languages. Her writings have also been included in syllabus of many colleges and universities.
She has received many awards including Sahitya Akademi and penned 19 books consisting poetry and short stories.

UDALGURI: The Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of newspaper reports of the alleged incident of police atrocities on a doctor in Chirang district on Friday.
AHRC has issued a notice to the District Magistrate, Chirang to cause an inquiry into the incident where media reports stated that the Officer-in-Charge of Amguri PS in Chirang District not only assaulted Dr. Madhurjya Kakati, in-charge of the Amteka Mini PHC but also made him to kneel down along with two others for not wearing masks.

TANGLA: A devastating inferno gutted six houses in Pujakhola locality of Tangla town on Tuesday night at about 9 pm.
Though the source of the fire has not been ascertained ,fire broke out followed by explosion of six cylinders razing the properties worth lakhs to the ground within minutes.
The house belongs to Fakira Ansari, Manik Ali,Bhim Ram,Raj Kumar Prasad,Akon Rabha and Sankar Basfor.

UDALGURI: A baby hog deer weighing about six kilogram was rescued by Mithu Sarkar and Ankit Tanti, two activists of Green Valley Wild Life Protection Society, an NGO of Orongajuli tea estate area today at about 3.00 pm and handed over this to the Udalguri forest department in a healthy condition.
While talking to this correspondent, Mithu Sarksr informed that the NGO has been instrumental to rescue young ones of hog deers, wild elephants, tiger cubs in the near past too and till date, it has been able to rescue such animals which came to their notice.

TANGLA, May 20: In an unfortunate turn of event a 32 year old reputed businessman Roshan Patowary an inhabitant of Ward No. 4 of Tangla town in Udalguri district was electrocuted to death while fitting an inverter battery at his residence at about 8 pm on Tuesday night.
