Gorkhas demand ST status

Hundreds of Gorkha peoples from four districts of BTAD region throng to participate in a three-hour sit-in-demonstration agitation programme on Monday at DRDA parking ground near DC office demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, recognition of Original Inhabitant (OI) status in NRC, nominate members from Gorka community in BTC council.

Agitators with banner,placards,fetoone participated the demonstration and shouted slogans demanding early granting ST status,OI status in NRC update, which was organized by Assam Gorka Sammelan, BTAD regional committee. The agitators voice sky wave with shoutings-‘No ST No Rest’, Gorkhas should be regarded as OI citizens in Assam nominate a member from Gorkha community in BTC council. The Sammelan submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister through Deputy Commissioner, Kokrajhar seeking early ST status to Gorkha community in Assam. The Sammelan warn to take vigorous mass agitation if their demands are not meet as early in coming days.

Laksmhi Sedai,president of the Sammelan told that the Grokahs are indigenous peoples of the state with own culture, identity and language because Gorkhas have been dwelling peacefully in Assam since time of immemorial as defense personnel, a few government officials and academicians, cattle breeders etc in all spheres of Assam. He has demanded the Gorkhas should get early ST status to meet healthy development I the state. He expressed serious concern over tactically non granting OI status to Gorkha community in NRC update in Assam, besides keeping community on confusion with marking non-original inhabitants.

He has put demand of OI status for Gorkha community while filling NRC update. He has also demanded a member should be nominated from Gorkha community in BTC council to represent community with development aspects.

“We started our agitation from Kokrajhar to the cause of ST status, OI in NRC update, nomination of a member from Gorkha in BTC council. We put demands to the higher authority and government to meet early fulfillment,other wise mass agitation will be initiated in days to coming. Government deprived Gorkha community from all fronts of development as well ST status since long years back. The government should take stern measure to fulfill community’s issues and aspects”,Sedai said.

It is my pride, to read the above article which is appreciated. Gorkhas are the key element for peace and prosperity of the soil. Even though, they are still struggling for their identification and their own home land. Each Gorkha has to be motivated, through a spirit of friendship and mutual understanding among themselves and communities around. In addition, walk together and work together to reach to great destination with a fruitful result. I would say, peace does whatever we want. So much thanks to my dear brothers and sisters.

Two detained for priest killing in Kokrajhar

Sensation prevails in Kokrajhar following unidentified miscreants killed  a temple priest on Sunday. Hours after the incident police detained two persons in this connection. According to eye witness,a group of two-four unknown miscreants wearing black clothes entered the temple near Kokrajhar railway station and brutally muredered the priest in the wee hours. According his sons, apart from performing pujas at the temple, their father dealt in lottery at daily bazar in Kokrajhar town. 1 dead, 20 hurt in bus mishap

At least one person died and twenty others  sustained serious injuries when the bus in which they were travelling collided its head on another bus at Alipurduar in West Bengal on Saturday. The mishap took place early in the morning and both the buses were over loaded with passengers. Thr driver of a bus who sustained grave injury later died in the hospital. Other injured passengers have been battling for life at the hospital. Traffic snarl disrupted normal movement of vehicles for several hours.  

ABSU sticks to protest on teacher appointment

The All Bodo Student's Union(ABSU) has come down heavily on education minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma for appointment of non-Bodo medium teachers in Bodo medium schools across the state when the student body was taking out a protest rally in Kokrajhar on Friday.Hundreds of student's union activists and citizens participated with banner,placards along with torch in the rally and shouted slogans on demand of appointment of Bodo medium background teachers in Bodo medium schools.The rally started from Bodofa Children park in Kokrajhar traversed to Pragati Bhawan via JD Road.

Tribute to Bhupen Hazarika

Assam on Friday paid tribute to Dr Bhupen Hazarika on the 91st birth anniversary of the music maestro with huge pomp and gaiety. Cut outs of the film maker and music composer were installed in the nook and corner of thr state for celebrating his day long birth anniversary.  Bhupendra Sangeet competition, discussion of the Assam Ratna’s life and contribution and cultural programmes were lined up in many places to mark the occasion.  People thronged in thousands at the Gauhati university premises to catch a glimpse of his grave. Tribute to Daoharu Garlabata Basumatary

The influential All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) and Bodo society paid tribute to Daoharu Garlabata Basumatary on his 17th death anniversary at Shyamtaibari village in Kokrajhar district on Thursday.  The anniversary was organized jointly by Ramfalbill Anchalik ABSU and Garlabata Basumatary Public Charitable Trust (GBPCT) at his burial place Shyamtaibary and Janata College, Serfanguri with a daylong pragramme.  As part of the programme, Pranay Kumar Brahma, trust chairman hoisted the trust flag in the morning followed by homage to the tomb paid by his widow Raktima Basumatary. Baksa police apprehended two gamblers during a raid at Simlabari area in Barbari area on Thursday. Acting on a tip off, police conducted immediate a search operation where the duo were arrested. They were identified as Gokul Deka and Uday Kumar.

Man arrested for kidnapping woman

Kokrajhar police have arrested a person three days after he allegedly kidnapped a married woman who was safely rescued.  The woman was rescued a couple of hours after the incident  from Alomganj area under Gauripur poluce station of Dhubri distric and acting on het statement the person was arrested.   Identified as Sahidul Ali, he was picked up at Alomganj village in Gauripur after the rescue of the victim.
