Birth centenary of Padmashree Dr. Robin Banerjee celebrated
The birth centenary of Padmashree Dr. Robin Banerjee, a naturalist of international repute was celebrated in Golaghat on 12th August with a day-long programme. A painting competition among the students of various schools was also oranised on the occasion. Dr. Banerjee was born on 12th August, 1908 at Behrampore in Murshidabad District: of West Bengal. After completing his education from Edinburgh University in the year 1936, he joined the British Navy (1937) at Liverpool. He first visited Assam as a Locum-tenens to a Scottish Doctor in 1952 in Chabua Tea Estate, Assam as Chief Medical Officer.
He first visited to Kaziranga in early 1953. He was so much influenced by the lush greenery of Kaziranga that he decided to stay permanently in Assam and luckily in 1954 he got his next posting, a permanent one at the Dhansiri Medical Association, Bokakhat, near Kaziranga. He made his first film titled ‘Kaziranga’ and after that there was no turning back. He made 36 films/documentaries on wildlife for various wildlife societies in the different parts of the world, which won him 14 national and international awards. He was awarded ‘Padmashree’ in 197.
He was a pioneer in the movement of wild-life preservation. His work in the field of wildlife preservation was given recognition by various organizations prominent among them were The Assam Forest Deptt. Certificate of appreciation for conservation of wild life, Service to Society through individual excellence NECCL, Guwahati, Assam, Certificate of appreciation from 101 Radha Govinda Baruah Centenary Celebration, Guwahati, Assam etc.
Dr Banerjee died on 6th August 2003 at his residence at Golaghat. He donated 9 his residential land to Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya, Golaghat. He also converted his Bungalow into “UNCLE ROBIN’S NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM” and it is being maintained by Padmashree Dr. Robin Banerjee Trust. He has also donated 2 kathas of land for Doctor’s Club, Golaghat In return Doctor’s Club organize one day free Health Camp for poor patients every week.

Members of Golaghat Regional Students’ Union today started a week long signature campaign demanding solutions to various problems of Golaghat town. Acting on a tip off the 142 Battalion of Central Reserve Police Force stationed at Merapani along the Assam-Nagaland interstate border in Golaghat district, led by commandant Vishrant Kumar, today seized two trucks bearing registration nos.
