Torch rally for Bodoland

Reiterating its movement for separate Bodoland state, activists of All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU), under the aegis of six regional committees viz. Dimakuchi, Khagrabari, Khoirabari, Bhergaon, Panery and Tangla supported by PJACBM and NDFB (P), took out a massive torch rally throughout Tangla town on Monday evening.

The activists shouting slogans 'No Bodoland No rest' 'Divide Assam 50-50' demanded early solution to the long-pending demand of creation of separate Bodoland and political rights for Bodos living outside the proposed Bodoland area.

"Our voices have been ignored,the democratic protest through means of non-violence have been ignored said ABSU activist Manmohan Boro. Addressing the gathering of nearly 500 protestors the student body leaders exhorted the Centre to come up with a pragmatic policy on the Bodoland issue . The speakers said that the saffron party is busy celebrating their victory in different state polls ignoring the hunger strike by Bodo people at Kokrajhar in demand of Bodoland.

AASAA bandh cripples Tangla

The normal life was ground to halt at the buisiness and educational town of Udalguri district due to the 12 hour bandh called by All Adivasi Students' Association of Assam (AASAA) in protest against the killing of 11 persons at Pengeri in Tinsukia . All Private educational institutes, major markets and business centers were closed while private vehicles were seen plying across the road. No  untoward incident was reported in the district till the filling of this report in the evening.  

Cultural rally at Tangla

As a part of the three-day programme for the celebration of Rongali Bihu. The first day celebration on Thursday marked with flag hoisting by the president of the celebration committee, of Xadou Tangla Rongali Bihu Xanmilani. Followimg which a colourful cultural procession reflecting various communities was also taken out from the Tangla H.S playground throughout the town. People of the town came out in unison to participate in the rally. Many other Bihu Xanmilans also joined in unison and took part in the cultural rally.

Public averts fire at Tangla

The local public quickly extinguished a small fire at about 11:20 a.m. on Thursday  behind Smart Kitchen store, Old SBI Branch  Complex in Tangla. The fire was reported in the electricity meter box. The local public thronged into action and doused the fire. This correspondent was present at the time of the incident and contacted the fire brigade office following which team of firefighters rushed the spot and took stock of the situation. Timely action and  of the public averted a major incident. No injuries have been reported.  

Udalguri district Madahi Association's conference concluds

Untill the people of Madahi community come forward and promotes one's identitical surname. The development of the community in all spheres including the young generation would face identity crisis. This was observed by former President of All Assam Tribal Association Sarbeswar Madahi recently. Addressing the open session of the first bi-annual conference of Udalguri district Madahi Association as chief guest Sarbeswar Madahi said " Madahis' are not a sub-group community of the Rabhas ,we are a tribal community with distinct ethnic identity." Man run over and killed by train

An unidentified man, aged around 40 years, was run over and killed by a Guwahati bound train near Kukrakata railway track on the outskirts of Tangla town on Monday morning. His head was severely bruised and beheaded in the incident. Meanwhile the body has been sent for post-mortem. The local police did not recover any document or mobile phone from the dead body.

Dilapidated roads in Tangla

The efficiency of the Hagrama Mahillary led model BTC is in question in Tangla, the buisiness and education hub of Udalguri district littered with potholes on the main thoroughfares of the town. The appearance of potholes has nullified the tall claims of the much talked about Model BTC. The foundation stone of the construction of  the Interlinking Concrete Block Pavement Road from South Nalbari to Hospital Road which was layed on December 30 last year yet lies incomplete.  Local residents immensely suffer from the scattered potholes. AGP bike rally at Kalaigaon

AGP took out a bike rally at Kalaigaon LAC in support for candidate Muknda Ram Choudhury on Friday . More than 2000 bikers took part in the rally which was flagged off by Choudhury. Speaking on the ocassion Choudhury appealed the masses to vote for AGP for the sake of peace and development. The rally was also attended by BJP leader Niraanjan Singh. State govt responsible for teachers' salary: Hagrama

BTC Supremo Hagrama Mahillary and Rajya Sabha MP Biswajit Daimary attended a mass rally for BPF candidate of 65 No. Kalaigaon LAC Maheswar Boro at Khoirabari on Thursday.  Mahillary said "We are enough confident that people of BTC is with us and we will definitely triumph and form the government along with BJP and AGP". Wild elephant ransacks house at Bamunjuli

A wild elephant created havoc in Bamunjuli area of Udalguri district neighbouribg Indo-Bhutan border on Tuesday. The house of one Manju Deka was ransacked at about 3 am on Tuesday. Talking to Assam Times, Deka said "I and my daughter some how saved our lives.  Our houses have been ransacked and all our rice consumed by the elephant."  The poverty striken family is now looking for government's help.

Peaceful polls at Udalguri

The first phase of assembly polls held in three LAC's namely Panery, Udalguri and Mazbat od Udalguri district passed off peacefully on Monday, with no major incident being reported from any place. The district recorded an estimated 71% polling.
