The much awaited boxing carnival 4th Asian Women Boxing Championship got off to a colourful start at the Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium in the Sarusajai Sports Complex here yesterday evening in Guwahati. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi inaugurated the boxing extravaganza. Beijing08' Olympic bronze medal winning famed boxer Vijender Kumar along with his teamates Jitender Kumar and Akhil Kumar were the star attractions of the inaugural function.Though 12 counntries had confirmed participation but altogether 11 countries are taking part in the meet leaving Indonesia who did not turnup. The participating country teams - China, DPR Korea, Kazakstan, Korea, Macao, Mongolia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Chinese Taipei, Vietnam and host India - took part in the march past programme in the function while thrice world champion MC Mary Kom took oath on behalf of all the participants. India made a bad start as local girl Pranamika Borah lost to her Chinese opponent Dong Cheng 1-4 at the KNCB Indoor Stadium in the Sarusajai Sports Complex .. The bronze medallist in the Turkey world invitational meet in 2005, Pranamika even went pointless in the first and third round.Earlier in the opening bout of the championship Mala Rai of Nepal was beaten by Pin Meng Chien of Chinese Taipei 1-5 in the 46kg category. The boxing meet ends on 28th Sept. 2008. World class infrastructure of the sporting venues after the 33rd National Games has helped Assam to host international events in the city.

Police on Tuesday arrested Gargaram Pegu a day after the Mising autonomous council principal secretary was detained for possession of Rs 16 lakh in cash. Police interrogation is in progress. The Assam government finds it quite difficult to deport the Bangladeshi immigrants. This was what Assam Accord implementation minister Dr Bhumidhar Barman informed the Assam Assembly on Tuesday morning.
Replying to a set of questionnaires posed on the floor, Dr Barman said the BDR is quite reluctant to accept these Bangladeshi nationals in question. The House further discussed the return of at least 3900 Bangladeshi nationals after they were deported from the state.

The Assam government was today left red faced when the Supreme Court on Monday slapped a notice to Assam chief secretary PC Sarma. The court has entertained an allegation of violation of traffic rules at the Srirampur entry point along the Assam-West Bengal interstate border.
For the first time on Monday the Assam government admitted that dreaded terrorist and DHD-J chief Niranjan Hojai is absconding. This was confirmed by Assam forest minister Rockybul Hussain as he was replying to a set of questionnaires on the floor of the House on Monday. ULFA Vice president Pradeep Gogoi was released from jail a week after he procured bail from a local TADA court.
Gogoi completed his formalities on Thursday and came out of the Guwahati Central Jail on Thursday evening and stayed for the night at Guwahati and on Friday morning left for his home district Sivasagar. On his way to Mautgaon in Sivasagar, the ULFA top leader was accorded a heroic welcome by the people who lined up at the road side from the morning. Talking to reporters in Guwahati immediately after his release, Gogoi hoped that other ULFA leaders would be freed to help them sit together to hold a meaningful talk with the government.
The Central Administrative Tribunal has scrapped the appointment of Sankar Prasad Baruah as the Assam police director general. The tribunal has further asked the Assam Government to appointa new police chief within a period of one month.
The significant order came up on Friday when CAT was delivering its final order on senior additional director general Sarada Prasad who challenged Baruah’s appointment as DGP violating the seniority rules.
