KOLKATA& GUWAHATI: Even after she was caught in a barrage of criticism, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee continues to take on the NRC issue in Assam calling it a conspiracy against the Bangla speaking people. Many political parties, organizations and individuals have slammed the Trinamool Congress chief a day after she appealed to the people at a rally to give shelter to people from Assam in case they are driven out from the north eastern state.
She said “You must remain alert. If someone comes here, give them shelter as your own, do not drive them out.” She alleged that many genuine Hindi and Bangla speaking citizens from Bihar and West Bengal have been targetted in the name of an updated NRC. She said, “There are many from the State from Alipurduar, Murshidabad, Malda, Jalpaiguri who have spent decades in Assam. There are many people from Assam who are living in Bengal, but we never discriminate.”
