Wild jumbo kills two in Udalguri
UDALGURI: The
Indo-Bhutan border villages in
Udalguri district fraught with human-animal conflict and bloodshed, continues to witness brutality of wild jumbos. The wild elephant continues to create terror and trample humans creating
fear and panic among the border populace. A herd of wild jumbos trampled one Uttam Rabha to death at No. 2 Saglijhar(Notunbasti) area under Panery PS in
Udalguri on Thursday night . The unruly herd comprising 3-4 Jumbos were creating terror in the neighbouring village following which the victim along with his friends went to chase back the herds and he fell victim in the hands of the jumbo while his friends managed to save their lives. A herd of wild elephants had earlier trampled a 16 year old minor Rupali Toppo daughter of Baranbas Toppo and Jasinta Toppo at Badlapara T.E. under
Dimakuchi PS in
Udalguri district on October 7 night."Its high time the
state government should not wake up from deep slumber and not only deliver lip-service in the name of mitigating the man-elephant conflict but should adopt strategies " says known wildlife activist of
Udalguri,Nabajyoti Baruah. He further advocates that the forest department should set up control rooms at its divisional offices to monitor the situation and anti-depredation squads should be set up in each division involving local youths as volunteers to
deal with the problem.Baruah also exhorted the government to adopt measures similar to Bandipur
National Park in Karnataka. " M.D. Madhusudhan of the
Nature Conservation Foundation, Mysore, has tried out mitigation measures on agricultural lands by installation of co-operative electric fences. Such experiment has been very successful in Karnataka.If this model can be replicated in Assam and scaled up it can help reduce the conflict to a great extent." He added.

UDALGURI: The Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of newspaper reports of the alleged incident of police atrocities on a doctor in Chirang district on Friday.
AHRC has issued a notice to the District Magistrate, Chirang to cause an inquiry into the incident where media reports stated that the Officer-in-Charge of Amguri PS in Chirang District not only assaulted Dr. Madhurjya Kakati, in-charge of the Amteka Mini PHC but also made him to kneel down along with two others for not wearing masks.

TANGLA: A devastating inferno gutted six houses in Pujakhola locality of Tangla town on Tuesday night at about 9 pm.
Though the source of the fire has not been ascertained ,fire broke out followed by explosion of six cylinders razing the properties worth lakhs to the ground within minutes.
The house belongs to Fakira Ansari, Manik Ali,Bhim Ram,Raj Kumar Prasad,Akon Rabha and Sankar Basfor.

UDALGURI: A baby hog deer weighing about six kilogram was rescued by Mithu Sarkar and Ankit Tanti, two activists of Green Valley Wild Life Protection Society, an NGO of Orongajuli tea estate area today at about 3.00 pm and handed over this to the Udalguri forest department in a healthy condition.
While talking to this correspondent, Mithu Sarksr informed that the NGO has been instrumental to rescue young ones of hog deers, wild elephants, tiger cubs in the near past too and till date, it has been able to rescue such animals which came to their notice.
