The Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam's Marigaon district is known for its high density of one-horned rhinoceros and is also an important habitat for various bird species. The Guwahati Wildlife Division of the Assam Forest Department and biodiversity conservation organization Aaranyak recently conducted the third annual waterbird census at the sanctuary.
With active participation from a range of individuals and organizations, the census recorded 56 species of waterbirds with a total count of nearly 8,200 individuals, including both migratory and resident birds. Over 30 people, including forest department staff, Aaranyak members, and volunteers, took part in the census.
The main goal of the census was to count and track waterbird species for long-term conservation efforts. Divisional Forest Officer Jayashree Naiding Tonk welcomed the participants and highlighted the significance of the census.
This annual waterbird census has taken place for the past three years and continues to provide valuable data on the waterbird population in the area. The findings will aid in the conservation efforts of these important bird species and their habitats.
