Golaghat Hosts Tobacco Awareness Workshop Advocating a Smoke-Free Future

Golaghat: Last Wednesday, an insightful sensitization workshop addressing the detrimental effects of tobacco use was organized at the conference hall of the District & Sessions Judge’s office in Golaghat. The event witnessed the presence of key figures in the fight against tobacco consumption, including Secretary of DLSA Golaghat, Smt. JyotiSmita Sarma, Dr. Sunita Ekka from District Tobacco Control Cell, Golaghat, and Rudhir Prakash Sarma, Divisional Coordinator of Upper Assam Division from The UNION. Officials from the DLSA office and the health department also actively participated.

The workshop commenced with a warm welcome address, followed by an insightful discussion on the provisions of the COTPA Act 2003 by the Secretary of DLSA. Dr. Ekka provided an in-depth analysis of the tobacco burden in Assam and the diverse health implications arising from tobacco use. She took the opportunity to shed light on the achievements of the District Tobacco Control Cell in Golaghat, expressing gratitude to colleagues and stakeholders for their unwavering support.

Rudhir Sarma from The UNION emphasized the importance of a united front to combat the tobacco menace and encouraged collective efforts towards achieving a tobacco-free generation. He urged the attendees to utilize and share information about the toll-free National Tobacco Quitline Services (1800-112-356), established by the Indian government to offer counseling services for individuals keen on quitting tobacco.

The workshop culminated with the Secretary of DLSA, Golaghat, urging all present to refrain from tobacco use, prioritize their health, and disseminate the knowledge acquired during the workshop to their colleagues, friends, and family members. The event showcased a collective determination to work towards a healthier, tobacco-free community.

To set up a pharmaceuticals manufacturing factory in Chaygaon, Palasbari areas in Kamrup district. An Assam government panel dealing with the state’s industrial development observed adverse impact of the withdrawal of the North East Industrial Investment policy. Preside over by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, the meeting of the committee expressed grave concern over the setback to the investment due to the Centre’s decision to withdraw the policy. The meeting, however, suggested more industrial units outside Guwahati which would be encouraged with more incentives.Industry minister Basanta Das, additional Chief Secretaries, R.T.Jindal, Subhash Das, K.V. A home ministry report finds a safe route of arms smugglers in the north eastern state of Assam. Security forces have seized 1705 illegal arms in the state during the last four years.According to the report from January to June this year alone 187 illegal weapons have been seized by the security forces suggesting the growing cases of arms smuggling. This is apart from the seizure of 525 arms in 2012. The number of illegal arms seized in 2013 stands at 542 against 451 such seizure in 2014. Manipur is not lagging behind in the seizure of illegal firearms.
