Udalguri:  A court in Udalguri has sentenced five people to life imprisonment for the 2017 murder of Sahid Jamal in Kalaigaon.

District and Sessions Judge N. Senabaya Deori pronounced the verdict on June 20, convicting Tomser Ali, Md. Lal Miah, Md. Aibar Ali, Badsa Mondal, and Gajibur Rahman. The judge also imposed a fine of Rs. 10,000 on each convict under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) pertaining to murder.

The prosecution established that the accused attacked Jamal with lethal weapons on May 5, 2017, near his residence in Borjhar Bagicha village, causing fatal injuries. Other family members were also critically injured in the incident. Jamal succumbed to his injuries days later while undergoing treatment at Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH).

Following the attack, a family member filed a First Information Report (FIR) with the Bhakatpara Outpost. The police registered a case under sections 148 (rioting), 149 (unlawful assembly), 302 (murder), and 34 (common intention) of the IPC. After a lengthy trial with witness testimonies and evidence presentations, the court convicted and sentenced the accused to life imprisonment.

Additionally, the court directed the District Legal Service Authority to award Rs. 5 lakh compensation to Jamal's family under the victim compensation scheme as per Section 357 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).

ULFA(I) militant gunned down in Udalguri

A self styled sergeant major of ULFA(I) was gunned down in an encounter with security forces at Nalkhamra chuburi in Sunanaipara village, Udalguri on Thursday noon. Acting on intelligence inputs, a joint operation was launched by the Army and the police where the militant was gunned down in an exchange of fire with the security forces. Bike lifters arrested in Rowta

Rowta Police busted a gang of bike lifters and arrested four persons besides recovering 4 stolen motorcycles from their possession on Thurday. Following the theft of a bike during the cultural night programme of Rowta Charali Rangmanch Bihu on Tuesday night, a police team immediately swung into action and recovered the stolen motorcycle along with three other bikes from Harisinga of Udalguri district on the same night. A daring case of buglery just at stone's throw away distance from Tangla Police Station has raised eyebrows of locals. Free scooters for girl students

In a goodwill initiative of the BTC authority and upholding one of its pre-poll promise. Meritious  girl students of underpriviliged BPL class  who cleared +2 Exams last year were awarded with a gearless  scooter each in a ceremonial function at Udalguri HS School on Saturday. Elephant tusk seized

The 37th Bn Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) troops stationed at Bholatar B.O.P along the Indo-Bhutan border in Udalguri district recovered two pieces of Elephant tusk and a bi-cycle during routine patrolling near Shuklai river, Dimakuchi in the wee hours of Friday. The value of seized wild life product has been estimated to be about one lakh, stated a press statement. The seized items were handed over to the forest department.
