Durand Cup Trophy Tour Kicks Off in Kokrajhar with Enthusiasm

Kokrajhar, often referred to as the City of Peace, witnessed a grand kickoff for the trophy tour of the 133rd edition of the Durand Cup 2024, a prestigious football tournament, on Sunday. The event, held at the Bodofa Cultural Complex, Chandamari, saw a significant gathering of sports enthusiasts, citizens, Indian army officials, and government representatives from the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) and Assam.

Assam's Minister for Sports and Youth Welfare, Nandita Gorlosa, along with the Chief Executive Member of BTR, Pramod Boro, and Indian Army officials, flagged off the event. The ceremony marked the arrival of the Durand Cup trophy in Kokrajhar, which was displayed amidst a large and enthusiastic crowd.

Organized by the Indian Armed Forces and supported by the governments of BTR and Assam, this is the second consecutive year that Kokrajhar is hosting the event. The city has gained popularity for its smooth organization of the tournament, reflecting the region's progress and peace.

In his address, Pramod Boro highlighted the significance of hosting the Durand Cup in Kokrajhar, emphasizing the region's transformation over the past 3.5 years from a cycle of violence to an era of peace and progress. He noted that the event's successful hosting is a testament to the pervasive tranquility in BTR today.

"It was a delighted moment to attend the trophy unveiling and flag-off ceremony of the 133rd edition of the Durand Cup 2024 in Kokrajhar, the City of Peace. Football is a passion for all citizens of BTR, young and old. Our government has made assiduous efforts to enhance BTR’s sporting infrastructure and foster an environment of peace where budding sporting talents can blossom and flourish," Boro said. "Kokrajhar is proud to host the historic Durand Cup 2024 once more. This event will give immense impetus to the development of sports, particularly football, in our region. I wish for the smooth success of the Durand Cup, attracting sports lovers and citizens alike," he added.

Minister Gorlosa extended her best wishes and greetings to the Durand Cup organizing committee and emphasized the healthy sporting environment that football fosters. The event also featured a multi-community cultural demonstration, adding to the festivities.

Other notable attendees included Cabinet Minister Urkhao Gwra Brahma, MPs Rwngwra Narzary and Joyanta Basumatary, BTCLA Speaker Katiram Boro, Lt. Gen. RC Srikanth, VSM, Chief of Staff, HQ Eastern Command, Chairman DCOC, and eminent footballer Halicharan Narzary.

Preparations for the Durand Cup football tournament, scheduled to be held from 30th July at the SAI stadium playground in Kokrajhar, are in full swing. The stadium has been beautifully decorated, and the gallery is well-equipped to accommodate spectators.

Three NDFB-S cadres arrested

Kokrajhar: As many as three hardcore cadres of the NDFB- Saoraigwra faction were apprehended by Kerala police in Ernakulam on Thursday morning. The arrested cadres were on their way for Ernakulam when police arrested them.  According to police, on November 16(2017) at about 6am,  a group of suspected NDFB(S) militants led by late Soheton Narzary @ Sandw (later killed in an encounter with Kokrajhar Police) shot at and critically injured a civilian Rosno Basumatary, son of Jakob Basumatary , resident of village Dumbajar under Gossaigaon PS in Dumbazar Dolgaon Tiniali in Kokrajhar district. Mohmedan lifts Bodoland Martyrs gold cup

Kokrajhar: Mohmedan Sporting Club, Kolkata defeated Oil Sports Club, Duliajan 4-3 via penalty kick to lift the trophy in the final match of the19th edition of the Bodoland Martyrs Gold Cup football championship-2018 held at KDSA stadium on Sunday evening. Both team were goalless in the full time of the championship.  The winning team was awarded cash Rs. One lakh and a trophy. The runners team was awarded cash Rs. 50 thousand and a trophy.  The annual football championship was organized by Ex BLT welfare society and Kokrajhar district sports association (KDSA).   

U-14 school football at Baasugaon from Nov 27

Kokrajhar: Preparations have got underway to host 64th National School Games-2018 of football U-14 at Jawahar Navadaya Vidyalaya(JNV),Ranchaidham Basugaon in Kokrajhar with four day long programme scheduled from November 27. National alliance opposes Citizenship Amendment Bill

Assam Tchokball team felicitated in Kokrajhar

Kokrajhar: State players of the Assam Tchokball team was accorded warm welcome and felicitated at Kokrajhar rail station on Thursday here in Kokrajhar who were participated in the 9th national sub-junior and junior girl’s championship 2018-19 recently concluded in Navi Mumbai of Maharastra. Assam team’s girls  won second prize in junior and got third prize in the sub-junior boys respectively showcasing attractive performances in the chmapionship. Dr Pramad Chandra Bhattacharya passes away

Eminent linguist, folklorist and scholar of Assam Dr Pramod Chandra Bhattacharya breathed his last on Monday. He was 93. Dr Bhattacharya had contributes a lot toward uplift and development of the Bodo language. He had done his Ph D on Bodo language and culture. He was a prolific writer and actively associated with literary bodies of the state.  Various organisations including All Bodo Students Union, Bodo Sahitya Sabha, former Rajya Sabha MP UG Brahma have expressed condolence on the demise of Dr Pramad Bhattacharya.

Bodoland martyrs gold cup begins

Kokrajhar: The 19th edition of the Bodoland Martyrs Gold Cup football trophy -2018  has began from Sunday at KDSA ground in Kokrajhar.  Minister for Social welfare department Pramila Rani Brahma graced the event as chief guest.  In the inaugural match, Guwahati City Police took on Bongaigaon Eleven Star sports club.  Altogether 13 teams across the country are  participating the football trophy. Community fishing creates in Kokrajhar

Kokrajhar: Citizens in large numbers are seen busy fishing in the Longa River near Ramfalbill, Kokrajhar district since eraly morning on Thursday.  The Longa Irrigation Sluice gate has released the river water every year on November 1. Hence people from different places of the lower Assam are coming here for fishing. Today, the river water was relesaed at 5 am in the morning. The river site was like festivity as all sections of people gathered to fish in the river with fishing materials.  

Dead body recovered

Kokrajhar: A dead body was recovered at Boro Gendrabill on Sunday evening. The body of a young woman aged around 18 year which was found in a mysterious condition. The body was tied on her legs when her body found, said eye witnesses. Burnt marks were also seen in the body. Local public suspect that she was raped and later murdered.  According to family members, she was supposed to get married. Police rushed the spot to take stock about incident. The body was sent Kokrajhar for PM.
