In a major boost for Bodo-medium education in Assam, the state government has announced the promotion of 25 Middle English (ME) schools to model high schools. The decision was made during a high-level review meeting chaired by Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu at Janata Bhawan on Wednesday.
The meeting reviewed the progress of key schemes under the Department of Primary and Secondary Education’s 2025–26 budget. Key initiatives discussed included distribution of bicycles to Class 9 students, progress under the Chief Minister’s Millionaire Scheme, implementation of free admissions for school students, assessment of infrastructure and academic quality in newly upgraded higher secondary schools, as well as policy matters on tutor wages, teacher promotions, and improvements in the selection of headmasters and principals.
Among the highlights was the formal approval to upgrade 25 Bodo-medium ME schools into model high schools, aligning them with the Tea Garden Model Schools initiative.
Dr. Pegu emphasized the need for timely and effective implementation of these schemes to ensure that benefits reach grassroots communities, especially in underserved regions.
The move has been widely welcomed by the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU), which has long advocated for such measures to support Bodo-medium education. ABSU President Dipen Boro expressed gratitude to the state government and Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu.
“We are pleased to get the news that 25 schools have officially been decided to be Bodo Medium Model Schools, on the lines of Tea Garden Model Schools,” Boro said. “This marks a significant milestone in response to the proposal by ABSU and the Bodo Sahitya Sabha to establish 35 new Bodo Medium Model Schools.”
Boro also thanked Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma for supporting the initiative. “This decision will greatly benefit Bodo students and further strengthen our educational foundation, fulfilling a long-standing demand spanning over a decade. We eagerly look forward to the establishment of the remaining proposed schools in the near future,” he added.
The development is being seen as a historic step towards improving access, infrastructure, and quality of education for the Bodo-speaking community in Assam.
