In a major political development ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, the Indian National Congress has appointed Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi as the new President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), replacing Bhupen Kumar Borah. The move signals a fresh push by the party to regain political ground in the northeastern state.
Alongside Gogoi, the party has named three Working Presidents for the Assam unit: Jakir Hussain Sikdar, Roselina Tirkey, and Pradip Sarkar. The appointments are effective immediately, as per a statement issued by AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal.
The changes come as the Congress intensifies preparations for the 2026 Assembly elections, aiming to challenge the BJP-led government after successive defeats in the last two state polls. Gogoi, the son of former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, is currently serving as the Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha and represents Jorhat constituency.
The party also announced the formation of key committees to oversee campaign strategy and planning for the state. Outgoing President Bhupen Kumar Borah will head the Campaign Committee, while Debabrata Saikia will chair the Coordination Committee. Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi will lead the Manifesto Committee, and Rakibul Hussain has been appointed Chairperson of the Publicity Committee.
As part of the reshuffle, Roselina Tirkey is being relieved of her current responsibilities as AICC Secretary.
The Congress leadership has signaled that Gogoi will lead the party's charge in Assam in 2026, potentially positioning him as the party's chief ministerial face. The current legislative assembly's term ends on May 20, 2026.
