Ranjit Sarma’s Novel The Tents Unveiled at Guwahati Press Club

Guwahati, August 22: Assam’s noted screenplay writer Ranjit Sarma has released his much-anticipated novel The Tents, adding another significant work to his creative repertoire. The book was launched at the Guwahati Press Club in the presence of eminent personalities from Assam’s literary and social circles.

Sarma, celebrated for his collaborations with filmmakers such as Bidyut Chakraborty (Rag-Birag, Nisiddha Nadi), Manju Bora (Baibhav, Anya Ek Jatra), Sanjeev Hazorika (Mimangsa), and Hemanta Kumar Das (Othello), has long established himself as one of the leading voices in Assamese cinema. Beyond screenwriting, he has penned the Assamese novelette Amithabhar Janma Mritu and a range of plays for radio and stage.

The Tents explores Assam’s turbulent past, weaving a gripping tale around Alex Goldsmith, an Assamese Christian, and his companions Suren Bora, a radical extremist, and Mohini Thapa. Against the backdrop of partition and insurgency, the narrative unfolds into a story of rebellion, betrayal, and redemption, capturing the complexities of identity and ideology in Assam’s history.

The launch event saw participation from writer and critic Bhaskar Phukan, quizmaster Aparajita Lahkar, and social activist Alex Thomas, among others. Dilip Sarma, economist and self-leadership mentor, delivered a comprehensive review, urging Millennials and Gen Z readers to engage with the book to understand Assam’s insurgency era.

Nupur Boruah felicitated the guests, while Divik Bhattacharjee anchored the session. The gathering also included the author’s family, friends, and well-wishers.

Expressing optimism, Ranjit Sarma hoped The Tents would resonate strongly with young readers. The book is now available at leading bookstores and online platforms including Amazon and Flipkart.
