Around 35 tea garden workers, including a pregnant woman, were injured after a vehicle carrying them overturned at Geleki Na Ali in Nazira on Friday morning.
According to reports, the accident occurred at around 7:00 AM when a Tata Ace vehicle (AS-04-BC-9838), owned by Pranjal Pangging of Hatipatti, was transporting workers from Hatipatti and Bogichapori areas to Geleki Athkhel Tea Garden as part of their daily commute.
Sources said the accident took place after a person suddenly ran across the road in front of the vehicle. In an attempt to avoid hitting the pedestrian, the driver applied the brakes abruptly, causing the overloaded vehicle to overturn on the road.
Nearly 35 male and female workers sustained injuries in the mishap, including a pregnant woman identified as Bhoni Laik.
Local residents immediately alerted Geleki Police, who rushed to the scene. With the assistance of local people, the injured workers were shifted to Geleki Primary Health Centre for initial treatment.
Among those injured were Kanda Karmakar, Karan Bhumij, Raghav Nayak, Tichan Karmakar, Bijoy Karmakar, Pradip Tanti, Peru Karmakar, Durga Karmakar, Arjun Bhuyan, Bholapon Tanti, Mason Ravidas, Upen Bhumij, Niharika Mesh, Ram Tanti, Pawan Bhuyan and Jiten Bhuyan, among others.
Several workers suffered serious injuries, including fractures and head injuries. Owing to the severity of their condition, a number of victims were referred to Nazira Civil Hospital for advanced treatment, while critically injured patients were later shifted to Sivasagar Civil Hospital at Joysagar and Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh.
Meanwhile, Geleki Police have seized the vehicle and initiated an investigation into the incident. Preliminary findings indicate that the vehicle was carrying more passengers than permitted. The driver, Ananta Das, who was also injured in the accident, is being questioned as part of the ongoing investigation.
