The Assam Foundation of North America (AFNA) program 'Sponsor a Child' started off with a meeting at Snehalaya Guwahati. Debojit Bora of AFNA talked in detailed about this project. The meeting was attended by 1) Parijat Academy, 2) Asha Darshan-Tamulpur, 3) sSTEP, Society for Social Transformation and Environmental Protection 4) Atma Nirbhar-Ek Challange, Guwahati and 5) SHED , a rehab centers for Mentally Retarded & Autistic children in, Beltola , Guwahati . Bidyananda Barkakoty of Friends of Assam and Seven Sisters , Guwahati graced the meeting and offered all assistance for the successful completion of this project.


Also present was a four year old boy Bishal Acharya accompanied by his grand father Tarun Sarkar. This innocent child Bishal lost his father Sujit Acharya (age 31 yrs) during the Guwahati bomb blast on October 30, 2008 at Ganeshguri. Late Acharya was the only earning member of this lower middle class family. Bishal's mother, Reeta Acharya (age 26 years), a housewife is still in the grip of shock and trauma. Bishal will start his education from January 2009 and has taken admission in Ideal Nursery School in Fatasil Ambari area of Guwahati. AFNA is going to sponsor the educational cost of this child.

I do not have much knowledge about AFNA but I know a little about Sehalaya.... I know the organisatoin is doing a lot for the street children....I am just crazy to be a part of it.... its mean a lot for me....I also want to be part of Snehalaya..........

Moderate polling is reported in altogether eleven Lok Sabha constituencies in Assam after voting began at 7 in the morning. Barring a few stray incidents, polling is by and large peaceful. The turn out is said to be low during the early hours in most of these constituencies due to drizzle from early in the morning. Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh is casting his vote at the Dispur HS School. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has also cast his vote in Jorhat. Amid tight security voting negins in Assam in its 11 Lok Sabha constituencies on Thursday. The voting began at around 7 in the morning to decide on the fate of altogether 127 candidates in the second phase of polling. Assam Election Watch (AEW), an organization monitoring the 2009 election candidates, has come out with the analysis of contesting candidates during phase I and II of the elections. AEW looked at 155 candidates out of 158 total contesting candidates in 14 constituencies of Assam. Aayushi Nimodia of Bokakhat has been invited by the visiting President Pratibha Patil.
