The Assam Foundation of North America (AFNA) program 'Sponsor a Child' started off with a meeting at Snehalaya Guwahati. Debojit Bora of AFNA talked in detailed about this project. The meeting was attended by 1) Parijat Academy, 2) Asha Darshan-Tamulpur, 3) sSTEP, Society for Social Transformation and Environmental Protection 4) Atma Nirbhar-Ek Challange, Guwahati and 5) SHED , a rehab centers for Mentally Retarded & Autistic children in, Beltola , Guwahati . Bidyananda Barkakoty of Friends of Assam and Seven Sisters , Guwahati graced the meeting and offered all assistance for the successful completion of this project.
Also present was a four year old boy Bishal Acharya accompanied by his grand father Tarun Sarkar. This innocent child Bishal lost his father Sujit Acharya (age 31 yrs) during the Guwahati bomb blast on October 30, 2008 at Ganeshguri. Late Acharya was the only earning member of this lower middle class family. Bishal's mother, Reeta Acharya (age 26 years), a housewife is still in the grip of shock and trauma. Bishal will start his education from January 2009 and has taken admission in Ideal Nursery School in Fatasil Ambari area of Guwahati. AFNA is going to sponsor the educational cost of this child.

I do not have much knowledge about AFNA but I know a little about Sehalaya.... I know the organisatoin is doing a lot for the street children....I am just crazy to be a part of it.... its mean a lot for me....I also want to be part of Snehalaya..........

Assam Congress leader and health minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma says the main Opposition AGP virtually surrendered before BJP when both the parties struck seat sharing deal in Delhi. Addressing a press conference at the Rajiv Bhawan on Saturday, Dr Sarma said with this Assam witnessed the beginning of an end to the regional politics in the state. The Assam Assembly has cleared a Rs 1,85,056 crore interim budget for April to July 2009 after it was tabled in the House by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi who is holding the finance portfolio on Satrurday. Gogoi presented the Vote-on-Accounts in the brief one-day budget session as the government could not lay the full budget for 2009-10 with the Model Code of Conduct for the Lok Sabha elections slated from April 16. The Asom United Democratic Front, NCP, CPI, CPM leaders are holding a crucial meeting in the city of Guwahati on Saturday to finalise the seat sharing deal for the upcoming Lok Sabha poll in Assam slated for April 16 and 23. Guwahati Press Club with the support from ERD Foundation, Guwahati has declared a short term fellowship programme to study various aspects of pavement dwellers (primarily beggars) of the city.
