Sanjoy Hazarika Bereaved

Minal Hazarika wife of Sanjoy Hazarika, noted author, Journalist and Managing Trustee of Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research (C-NES), passed away on at the Gangaram Hospital, New Delhi on April 3, 2009. She had suffered a stroke at Guwahati on 15 January 2009 and was undergoing treatment at Gangaram Hospital for nearly three months. She was in her fifties and was a well known figure in Assam and in New Delhi. She leaves behind a daughter (Meghna Hazarika) besides her husband. At this hour of grief we pray for the departed soul.

I never knew Mrs. Hazarika personally but I had a telecon with Mr. Hazarika and from what I have read of him and his films I have seen, at this moment my condolences and prayers are with him and his family.

I knew Sanjoy from our St. Edmund's school days in Shillong. Mrs Hazarika's work through C-NES has been an eyeopener for Indians vis-a-vis the North East. This loss is a great setback to propagation of the understanding of the psyche of northeasterners. May her soul rest in peace and may Sanjoy and Meghna have God's blessings to overcome this bereavement.

SHG Mela at Golaghat

The District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) Golaghat organized a self help group mela at the New Jail Market, Golaghat. As many as 30 nos. of SHGs of different development blocks of the district took part in the event. The main object of the mela was to promote the Assamese traditional items made by different SHG groups during the festival time.

13 DHD (J) and FGN cadres lay down arms to Manipur CM

Thirteen activists of two underground organizations of Assam have formally laid down arms to Manipur Chief Minister O. Ibobi Singh at the Mantripukhri head-quarters of IGAR (South) on Wednesday. The surrender ceremony was held in the presence of DGP Y. Joykumar Singh and IGAR (S) Maj Gen C.A. Krishnan. The weapons handed over to the security officers included Lathod gun one, three pistols, 9mm smc one from the five DHD(J) cadres and the FGN cadres handed over G 3 rifle one, AK 47 rifle one, Lathod gun four and 9 mm smc one. The surrender ceremony was organised by Inspecter General, Assam Rifle (South).

Zeliangrong union called bandh

Condemning alleged high-handedness of the 11 Assam rifles, All Zeliangrong Students’ Union (Assam, Manipur and Nagaland ) has decided to call a 48- hour total bandh in all the Zeliarong inhabited areas in Manipur with effect from midnight of April 17 to midnight of April 19 to pressurize the Government to translate its demands into actions.
