Sanjoy Hazarika Bereaved

Minal Hazarika wife of Sanjoy Hazarika, noted author, Journalist and Managing Trustee of Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research (C-NES), passed away on at the Gangaram Hospital, New Delhi on April 3, 2009. She had suffered a stroke at Guwahati on 15 January 2009 and was undergoing treatment at Gangaram Hospital for nearly three months. She was in her fifties and was a well known figure in Assam and in New Delhi. She leaves behind a daughter (Meghna Hazarika) besides her husband. At this hour of grief we pray for the departed soul.

I never knew Mrs. Hazarika personally but I had a telecon with Mr. Hazarika and from what I have read of him and his films I have seen, at this moment my condolences and prayers are with him and his family.

I knew Sanjoy from our St. Edmund's school days in Shillong. Mrs Hazarika's work through C-NES has been an eyeopener for Indians vis-a-vis the North East. This loss is a great setback to propagation of the understanding of the psyche of northeasterners. May her soul rest in peace and may Sanjoy and Meghna have God's blessings to overcome this bereavement.

Arabinda associate arresed on extortion charges

Pro talk ULFA leader Anu Buragohain has been arrested on extortion charges. According to information, Buragohain, the publicity member of the outfit's central committee was arrested by Chandmari police when he came to the area to extort money. Details area awaited. Buragohain is one of the close associates of chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa who deserted Bangladesh camp before Rajkhowa was released on bail.

AGP to announce second list today

Amid strings of resentment and dissidence AGP is set to announce its second list on Monday. The list contains the name of the candidates of some vital constituencies which was approved on Saturday.

20 killed in 5 road accidents

Atleast 20 were killed in 5 seperate road accidents in the state during the last 12 hours. The first one took place in the morning at Bokolialghat where a Tata mobile van slipped in to a deep drain leaving 4 dead on the spot. This was followed by a tragic accident at Besimari in Mongoldoi where 8 killed and over 20 injured at around 7 in the evening. It took place when a truck rammed into a Santro car which hit hardly at a bullock cart. Atleast 8 died on the spot and over 20 injured. In yet another accident, 5 of a family were killed when their car collided its head on a truck in Dibrugarh at around 8 in the evening.

AGP set to forge poll pact with ASDC and BPPF

The main opposition AGP is in a mood to strike prepoll deal with ASDC and B PPF to fare well in the assembly polls slated on April 4 and 11 AGP will leave a few seats for A SDC in Karbi Anglong district while the main opposition party is set to leave a good number of seats for BPPF in the Bodo dominated districts.

Crisis of confidence cripples BJP

Trouble brews in bjp a month ahead of assembly. Hundreds of partymen from Morigaon vendalized the state party office in Guwahati alleging that Bhadrakanta Nath was not fielded. Important materials including computer have been damaged. The party has fielded Prahlad Bhuyan in morigaon. On the other hand, Dispur BJP workers are also unhappy a day after leader Jayanta Das was not fielded. His supporters alleged that Dispur candidate Ronghang has hardly and hope. Notably, the party on Friday announced a list of 54 candidates where several leaders have been left out. Meanwhile, state BJP leadership have expelled 6 workers from Morigaon for vendalizing party office in Guwahati on Saturday.

Centre clears prosecution of NC Hills engineer

The Centre has approved prosecution of an engineer in connection with the multi crore scam. According to home ministry sources, NIA probing the terror funding cases in NC Hills gets green signal to prosecute an engineer Karuna Saikia in this connection where funds meant for poor people has been siphoned off and part of swindled fund reached DHD-J.

Assam poll on April 4 and 11

The wait is over.Assam is all set to go to the assembly polls on April 4 and 11. This was announced by chief election commissioner Dr SY Qureshi. Addressing a press conference on Tuesday in Delhi,Dr Qureshi said that the Assam governor will issue poll notification onFridayfor the first phase.The notification for second phase of polling slated for April 11 would be issued on March 11. The counting of votes would take place on May 13 along with West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Puducherry.
