Sanjoy Hazarika Bereaved

Minal Hazarika wife of Sanjoy Hazarika, noted author, Journalist and Managing Trustee of Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research (C-NES), passed away on at the Gangaram Hospital, New Delhi on April 3, 2009. She had suffered a stroke at Guwahati on 15 January 2009 and was undergoing treatment at Gangaram Hospital for nearly three months. She was in her fifties and was a well known figure in Assam and in New Delhi. She leaves behind a daughter (Meghna Hazarika) besides her husband. At this hour of grief we pray for the departed soul.

I never knew Mrs. Hazarika personally but I had a telecon with Mr. Hazarika and from what I have read of him and his films I have seen, at this moment my condolences and prayers are with him and his family.

I knew Sanjoy from our St. Edmund's school days in Shillong. Mrs Hazarika's work through C-NES has been an eyeopener for Indians vis-a-vis the North East. This loss is a great setback to propagation of the understanding of the psyche of northeasterners. May her soul rest in peace and may Sanjoy and Meghna have God's blessings to overcome this bereavement.

4 years old boy kidnapped at Geleky-Methonchuwa of Sivasagar

A 4-years old boy, son Anirudha Saikia and Padma Saikia of Geleky, Methonchuwa of Sivasagar was kiddnapped by one Diganta Sasoni of the same village on Wednesday. Bus conductor arrested for molestation charge at Tengapukhuri

Tengapukhuri out-post under Mathurapur Police station has arrested one Minu Ali, the conductor of a 709 mini bus (AS01-F-5007) on molestation charges on Wednesday. The complaint was filled by Lakhsmipriya Duwora Borgohain of Gorgaon Sunpura Gohain Gaon, Pallabi Konwar, Mamoni Barua, Malabika Hatimuria, resident of Rohdoi Pukhuri, Pator Gaon - all are student of Dol Bagan Higher Secondary School, traveled in the bus to their school.

Self-reliance workshop at Sivasagar.

The NGO, Jeuti (Unnatir Ek Yatra), under their project, Grammya Arthik Sashalata Mancha, organised a week long workshop at Singhdwar Community Auditorium. In this workshop they trained the participants to make items from the Jute, Water Hyacinth and un-used materials. The NGO also help their trainees for loan and marketing of their products. Nearly 150 trainees attened in this workshop.

Ai-Jong-lao festival observed in Sivasagar

Like the other communities of the world, the tai-ahom community of assam observe one of their harvest festival as Ai-Jong-Lao. In tai language Ai-jong-lao means the welcoming the wealth. The Tai-Ahom villagers of Bokota-Japihojia of Sivasagar district observed this festival after a gap of seven years with traditional rituals. In tai language, two "Mehenga" i.e. Thapona is established with bamboo ,bannana tree and Tokow (a kind of palm). Naga police thrash Golaghat school girls

Sensation prevails in Golaghat district of upper Assam when Nagaland policemen thrashed a group of school girls on Wednesday. The incident took place at around 9 in the morning as the policemen beat up some school goers at Thuramukh under Golaghat police station. Altogether 50 students, mostly girls, have been injured in the incident. Fifteen of these injured students have been rushed to the Kushal Konwar Civil Hospital. Jayanti Gogoi and Latumoni Bhuyan have been seriously injured.

Abahoni Limited lift Bordoloi trophy

Abahoni Limited of Bangladesh lift the presitgious Bordoloi Trophy at the end of a thrlling clash with 3 Star Club from Nepal on Wednesday in Guwahati. The 3 Star Club, Nepal was defeated by 3-0 gaols at the Nehru Stadium in the evening. The thrilling match was enjoyed by several thousands of football fans. Assam flood fury takes grim turn

Assam's overall flood situation remains grim on Wednesday with Brahmaputra flowing above the danger leevl affecting atleast five lakh people. According to the Central Water Commission, the Brahmaputra is crossed danger level at Guwahati, Goalpara, Sibsagar, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Nimatighat, Naharkatia and Tezpur. This wave have affected 11 districts where vast tracks of farm land and a large number of human habitations have been submerged in Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Sibsagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Morigaon, Sonitpur, Dhubri, Goalpara and Barpeta. Mani Subba's nephew kidnapped from Tinsukia

Suspected United Liberation Front of Asom has kidnapped nephew of former Congress MP Manikumar Subba from Tinsukia district of Assam on Wednesday. Mild quake hits Assam

A mild tremor has shaken parts of Guwahati and its neighbouring lower Assam districts on Saturday. As the mild quake struck at around at 12-33 pm, a section of the panic stricken residents in the city started coming out of their houses. According to US Geological Research center,the intensity of the earthquake is 4.8 in the Richter scale. There is however no report of any casualty.
